My basic premise is that anything you can say, you should be able to write. I do not think writing well and clearly should really be beyond anybody. I believe being able to write is useful because it is a method to practice critical thinking, and be better able to express and test what we think, and why. Now, as we position ourselves for the future, critical thinking seems to be something we need more of. I really love helping people and it makes me really happy when my students are able to write more clearly, feel more confident, and can see the relevance of literature more lucidly in their lives. I am also very curious about how we learn, absorb and analyze information, particularly in environments that are often so oversaturating and desensitizing. I see the most substantial and sustained improvement when I work with students for 1-3 hours a week, for a minimum of three months. Within 2-3 months, I generally start to see my students improve. With 6 months it seems this improvement becomes more substantial and long-lasting. This writing course is structured with the above intentions. For the first three months the focus is the following: Month One: - Basic structure of a piece of writing - Inclusion, and then integration of evidence such as quotes, technique & statistics. Which quotes, techniques & stats to use and why. Month Two: - How to use an introduction to establish the structure, scope and thesis of a piece of writing - Breaking down the internal structure of a paragraph, and different ways to organize it Month Three: - Ways to approach the overall flow of the text, and ensure arguments support each other cohesively - How to make the conclusion expand on, rather than repeat the introduction I also focus on how to approach studying a specific text, including time and relevant organizational skills. I always prioritize the safety and mental well-being of the student. For the three months following that, we focus on how to do all this well. If you think this could be useful for you, I'd like to work with you.
