About Isabelle
Over the past few years as a flute instructor, I’ve had the joy of guiding students at every stage—from hesitant beginners learning to produce their first sound to advanced players polishing virtuosic repertoire. I begin with the fundamentals: comprehensive care of the instrument, proper hand positioning, and establishing a relaxed, efficient embouchure. From there, I introduce breath management and posture through interactive exercises that become second nature. Technical drills—scales, arpeggios, and articulation patterns—are taught not merely for technique’s sake but always in the service of musical expression. I balance this with creative exploration, encouraging students to explore phrasing nuances, tone quality, dynamic contrast, and vibrato from early on. We weave in theory concepts like harmonic structure, tonal color, and phrasing as naturally as possible—often mapping them directly onto a piece the student is working on. To strengthen musical intuition, I introduce improvisation through guided melodic prompts, using small riffs and motifs that align with each student’s repertoire and personality. Lessons are always tailored to students’ goals—whether they’re preparing for auditions, developing solo skills, or simply discovering personal expression through music. I believe in empowering students with a personalized practice plan that outlines clear milestones—technical, musical, and expressive—and I support them with recordings, metronome exercises, and listening assignments. One of my proudest moments was guiding a middle schooler with stage fright through a competition piece: by focusing on mental preparation, breathing techniques, and storytelling through music, she not only performed with elegance but rediscovered her joy in performing. My vision for every student is to emerge as a confident, expressive flutist grounded in solid technique and inspired by a lifelong love of music.

Teaching flute is much more than transferring notes; it is about enabling each student to speak through music. My approach blends strong structure with flexibility, ensuring lessons are goal-oriented but always attuned to the student’s evolving needs and interests. Beginning students learn the essentials—balanced posture, steady breath, embouchure formation, tone quality, finger coordination, and rhythmic precision—through approachable melodies and tonal patterns designed to build assurance. As learners progress, we explore technical studies, expressive etudes, and complete works that challenge nuance, dynamics, and musical depth. I curate a diversified repertoire, including Baroque sonatas, Broadway classics, Latin-inspired melodies, and modern concert pieces, and I always encourage students to contribute selections that resonate personally. I weave in sight-reading strategies, ear-training drills, and phrasing exercises to develop musicianship that’s both intellectual and emotional. Creativity is a core pillar: I guide students through improvisational motifs, simple compositional assignments, and partner/group performances. I’ll never forget the delight of coaching a pre-teen as they collaborated on a duet that painted the sound of a sunrise—it became a catalyst for self-belief and ensemble joy. Supported by technology, I utilize metronomes with subdivisions, recording tools to document growth, interactive digital scores for annotation, and curated listening playlists to deepen musical context. These digital aids reinforce skills outside the lesson while promoting self-directed learning. In the end, my objective is to cultivate musicians who perform with clarity, expressiveness, and enthusiasm—students who feel nurtured, understood, and equipped to pursue their own musical paths.
