I believe that the creativity and imagination of the student play a significant role in music learning. Keeping this in mind, I try to facilitate an atmosphere that enhances the student's capabilities.

I am experienced in exam-oriented teaching for Keyboard, Piano, and Music theory. Though I encourage appearing for exams, I'm happy to take non-exam-based classes for students who are passionate about music.

As a coach, I strive to adopt an inclusive & diversified teaching approach that focuses on curating lessons based on a student's interests, expertise level, pace, and preferred playing styles- and to make learning fun, easy, and accessible from anywhere in the world.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My earliest childhood memories are always accompanied by Malayalam ghazals that endlessly played on the radio, very often with my grandfather crooning along. Just a few years later, when I started learning the piano, it felt like a homecoming and the fascination was immediate. Early on, I discovered that the piano is a versatile instrument that would uplift and soothe with music that went straight to the heart. Under the tutelage of some of the best teachers in Kerala, I completed grade 8 in piano by the age of 16. My interests and training were heavily influenced by both Western and Indian Composers - Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, A R Rahman, Vidyasagar, to name a few. I also had the good fortune to learn under Prof Surojeet Chatterjee at Km Music Conservatory.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I loved teaching right from my school days.

It gave me immense satisfaction to help my friends in understanding concepts and passing exams, whatever be the subject. In addition, it helped me learn better.

My best friend even suggested that I take up teaching as a career. I did not give it much thought until I started assisting my piano teacher of the time in giving lessons. Within a year, I knew that imparting knowledge was my calling.

Being a teacher needs you to constantly polish your skills and refine your teaching style. Each student teaches you something in return too. This motivates me and keeps me going!
  • How does your work help society?

Music is a very moving art form, one which speaks to our hearts. It can evoke emotions and soothe our minds. As with other instruments, learning the piano can be a rewarding experience that brings out our creative best. In addition, the masterful hand-eye coordination involved helps improve our analytical capabilities. Thus learning the piano can help us excel in various walks of life.

And most importantly the world is a better place with more artists.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I've had several wonderful teachers who influenced my life and taught me much more than just books. But my entire perspective changed after I met Prof. Surojeet Chatterjee at the KM Music Conservatory. His guidance and the effect he has on every single individual he teaches showed me how much a good teacher can motivate and shape a student.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I read a lot and I love solving puzzles and riddles. I'm an ardent cricket fan. I enjoy watching movies, exploring new songs, and traveling.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

As a young teenager, I would sometimes slack off during piano lessons. My mind would be on some cricket match I had planned with friends, and I would rush to finish class at the earliest. My then piano tutor would chide me and once gently explained how he was sure the piano would change my life, and I just had to give it my time and disciplined effort. His words stayed with me for a long time.

Cut to a couple of years later, I started tutoring students myself.

In my fourth year of teaching, I conducted an orchestra with my students to a jam-packed audience on the biggest stage in my hometown. It was an exhilarating and deeply satisfying experience that came after months of training and rehearsals.

It was a moment that reminded me how my teacher's words had come true and the piano had actually worked its magic on me.
