About Monica
Teaching saxophone is about more than helping students master notes and technique—it's about guiding them toward discovering their own voice through music. I work to establish strong fundamentals from the start: breath support, embouchure flexibility, articulation control, and tone development are taught in ways that are engaging, repeatable, and easy to integrate into daily practice. Alongside technique, I nurture musicality through phrasing work, listening exercises, and dynamic shaping, helping students connect emotionally with the music they play. Improvisation is introduced not as a separate skill but as part of a student's musical identity. We might start by playing simple motifs over a drone or exploring a single scale across different moods and rhythms. Over time, students build comfort with jazz improvisation, blues phrasing, or free-form creative expression. Music theory is never dry in my lessons; it's immediately tied to what students are playing, such as identifying the harmonic context of a solo section or using knowledge of modes to improvise with greater depth. I customize repertoire based on student interest and goals, whether they’re learning a Coltrane standard, preparing a classical jury piece, or composing original work. Digital tools like looping pedals, metronome apps, and slow-down software are used to deepen practice, especially for rhythmic accuracy and articulation consistency. A memorable moment in my teaching was when a shy student, who had never improvised publicly, joined a combo and led the group with a soulful, unplanned solo at their school concert. That experience didn’t just show their musical growth—it revealed their growing confidence and personal connection to music. I believe in helping every saxophonist unlock that connection by building skill, nurturing creativity, and celebrating their individuality through music.

Teaching saxophone is a dynamic and rewarding experience that involves guiding students through both technical mastery and artistic expression. I believe that every student has the potential to become a skilled and expressive musician, and my role is to facilitate that growth. I begin by establishing a strong technical foundation, focusing on posture, breath support, embouchure, tone production, and finger technique.
These elements are essential for producing a beautiful sound and for navigating the complexities of the instrument. However, I also recognize that each student has unique learning needs and goals. I tailor my lessons to suit individual preferences, whether that means focusing on classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, or contemporary music. I encourage students to explore a variety of musical genres to develop a well-rounded musicality and to keep lessons engaging.
For students interested in improvisation, I provide structured exercises that build confidence and creativity. I believe that improvisation is a vital skill that enhances musical expression and fosters a deeper connection to the music. Technology plays an important role in my teaching approach. I incorporate digital tools such as recording devices, tuners, and metronomes to facilitate practice and provide immediate feedback.
These tools help students become more self-aware and independent in their learning. One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching is witnessing a student's growth and development. I recall a student who struggled with rhythm and timing. Through consistent practice and focused guidance, they not only improved but also gained the confidence to perform in front of an audience. Their transformation was a testament to the power of dedicated instruction and the student's commitment. My ultimate goal is to inspire students to enjoy the process of learning, to express themselves through their instrument, and to carry the lessons learned into all areas of their lives.
