About Sam
I'm a second year History student at the University of Exeter and have previously tutored students between the ages of 13-18. I'm passionate about history and politics, and am comfortable teaching a wide range of topics across the two subjects.
I have degree level specialisms in the American West & Stalinist Russia, with knowledge across the C20th. I have also studied the War of the Roses, German Reformation and C16th-17th Witch-craze in detail.
I achieved A*s in both subjects at A Level (alongside A*s in German and EPQ), and also got 7 9s and 3 A*s at GCSE. I am DBS checked.

The way I structure tutoring sessions varies from person to person, but the focus is on interaction rather than lecturing. You need to feel engaged to make meaningful progress and the real benefit of tutoring is that you can talk through content and develop skills in a much more personal way than in class. Having taught a range of students aged 13-18, I know the importance of tailoring tutoring to the individual and feel confident doing this.
I think it's important to use practical resources to help ground teaching and provide students with a reference point to come back to. Depending on the particular lesson, I may provide revision notes or resources, annotated feedback of pieces of work, and examples of essay-writing.
I'm happy to focus on content or writing skills depending on a student's aims, but would still look to offer all-around advice as these are generally related and I want the tutoring to be beneficial outside of a specific topic.
I'm aware that most students have grades in mind when it comes to tutoring, so I will look to develop revision and exam techniques, and ensure my advice is tailored to specific exam boards. Preparation for this will be done outside of lesson time to ensure we make the most of the time, so it would be useful to know exam boards and topics in advance of the first lesson.
