About Sofia
As a Vanderbilt student minoring in English, I offer step-by-step, personalized tutoring sessions focused on helping students strengthen their writing skills—especially when it comes to essays. With experience writing academic and research essays in high school and college, as well as creative, narrative writing for college applications, I can assure you that your time spent with me will address exactly what you need. Whether you're a middle schooler just beginning to explore structure, a high schooler writing analytical papers, or a university student working on research or personal essays, my goal is to help your writing stand out with clarity, creativity, and confidence. Having applied to 32 universities and ultimately earning admission to Vanderbilt University, I’ve also gained valuable insight into crafting compelling essays that highlight your unique experiences and strengths and not only capture your voice but also resonate with admissions committees. This first-hand experience is a unique part of what I offer—if you choose to work with me, you’ll gain personalized support from someone who’s navigated the college application process extensively and successfully, and who knows how to help your story stand out.

My Teaching Approach:
I believe that every student has a unique voice—and my job is to help you express it clearly and compellingly. I specialize in breaking down the writing process into manageable steps, from brainstorming and outlining to refining your thesis and polishing your final draft. I ask questions that guide students to think critically and creatively, and I offer constructive feedback that highlights both strengths and areas for growth.
Typical Lesson Plan:
1. Warm-up (5–10 mins)
- Brief conversation to get the student engaged and comfortable (e.g., asking how their day was or discussing current events related to their essay topic).
- Quick review of writing concepts from previous sessions, focusing on areas for improvement.
2. Core Lesson (30–35 mins)
- Essay Structure Focus: Review of key components (thesis, introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion) and how they apply to the student’s current writing task.
- Timed Essay Practice: If preparing for timed essays, practice writing under time constraints while focusing on clarity, conciseness, and strong thesis development.
- Content Development: Work on brainstorming, organizing thoughts, and ensuring arguments are clear and well-supported.
- Editing & Refinement: Step-by-step editing of a specific essay draft or timed practice essay, addressing grammar, sentence structure, and style. Focus on enhancing creativity and making ideas more unique and compelling.
3. Wrap-up (5–10 mins)
- Summarize key takeaways from the session.
-Assign short-term goals (e.g., refine a specific paragraph, work on transitions).
- Prepare the student for the next session by setting expectations (e.g., practice timed writing at home, finish a specific section of their college application essay).
