About Destin
I grew up playing games with my grandfather. More an intellectual than the sporty type, he tricked my young brain into finding joy in academia through these games. Whether by activating my body in the learning through treasure hunts for information, or rewarding me with candy for knowing my vocabulary, he stoked a fiery passion within me for learning.
In my adolescence, I noticed that not everyone seemed to be as excited to absorb new information as I was and as a curious person, I needed to understand why! After a bit of digging the answer became obvious, people were struggling to learn because no one was explaining what the information really meant and why it was important or interesting.
Learning is like watching a movie, we will turn it off 15 minutes in if there is no meaningful story. Herein lies the truth of the English language: every word, every phrase, every structure has a story. They have a purpose. In these stories and within their purpose we can find our own voices, our own stories, and our own purpose. It is not bullet points of information that catapults our brain into learning, it is the intrigue of our own personal connection to the information that does.
My goal is to help the student find these threads of intrigue and support them as they weave them into curiosity, and eventually, expertise.
