About Alice
Deadline writing, during more than a dozen years of newspaper journalism, honed my skills steadily. But my subsequent experience as a PHD student taught me the value of rewriting and revising my work. No overt teaching has proved as beneficial to me as reading high quality work by the best writers, work that has been refined by excellent editors, as in The New Yorker magazine. One good sentence with a choice verb can make an essay or column.

My fundamental principles of teaching English grammar, composition, and improved writing skills:
1) Writing about favored subjects and ideas is the best way to begin language usage and improvement.
2) Reviewing and revising builds skills more efficiently than learning rules.
3) Reading and dissecting others' well written materials builds one's "ear" for good writing, especially reading aloud.
I have worked with adolescent, oung adut and senior citizen classes.
