About Jennifer
I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and have taken numerous elementary education courses. My work/study job in college was tutoring children, k-12 in Spelling, Vocab, and Mathematics with high success. I specialized in Geometry and Algebra. I worked for three years in early childhood education after graduating adter which, I took a break to raise my own three children. When each child turned 3, I set up a preschool classroom in our home and by the time they were 4 they were working at kindergarten levels in all areas despite each child being very different learners. One was visual, one was self motivated and needed little intervention while my middle child struggled. I spent 2 hours each weekday with each child, individually reviewing what they learned the previous year to avoid "summer learning loss". August was spent prepping them for the next year. All three of my kids are above grade level in all subjects. The most important lesson I've learned during these years was that just like we all have different personalities, likes, dislikes, etc..,
each child I've ever worked with, has their own, unique way of learning and the key is getting to know the child and finding their path to success. For example, my middle child had a hard time with spelling and sight words to the point that even with my experience, I was stumped. I decided to teach him using his love of Legos and Play-Doh combined with word associations to his interests. Within 2 weeks he went from knowing 5 sight words to having the entire kindergarten list memorized. I use this approach in mathematics as well. Any child can master any subject once you find their path. It takes me a few days approximately to figure out but once I do, and the child "gets" something they struggled with, their confidence builds and it is truly amazing fast they master the subject.

My teaching method is based first and foremost on getting to know the child. I spend a few days playing with and talking to the child with the intention of finding out everything I can about them. I also ask the parents to fill out a form, describing their child's main struggle and aspects of their personality, likes, dislikes, favorite characters; basically anything they want to tell me. What I learn during this time is the foundation of my approach. Then I start the process of tutoring by making it fun. Associating learning with things they enjoy. This method has never failed with any student I've tutored. Once they gain confidence, it's smooth sailing for the parents, myself, and most importantly, the child. When I was young I wanted to be a first grade teacher and started college majoring in elementary education. When I began tutoring in the work/sudy program, I learned that focusing on 1-5 kids at a time is almost a guaranteed path to success, no matter what the subject or how much a child struggles with it. That's when I decided to change my major to Psychology. I chose each non required course with a purpose. I took child psych, cognition, classes on learning disabilities, etc with the intention of working in early childhood education to get hands on experience. When I started a family my method was reinforced as I taught my own children. To this day, I use this method whenever one of my kids is struggling with a subject. I chose to tutor in Algebra because it is my strongest subject and the same methods I used to teach son struggling with sight words can be applied with ease. I wish I could have chosen more and will.do so in the future as I believe in this method. I also believe in every child. Positive reinforcement and opptomism play a crucial role in my method as well. Everyone hoitsva road block at some point in their lives but luckily, roadblocks are removable.
