About Keri
How to reduce a 20+ year career as artist and pedagogue into one paragraph?
Alright - Let's give it a go ...
Classical voice and musical comedy studies at Northwestern University (near Chicago) lead to a passion for JAZZ. Even before pocketing the master's degree in jazz pedagogy (1998), my teaching career began in parallel with that of professional vocalist. Today I give private lessons and workshops created on behalf of my itinerant "Jazz Vocal Academy International "- methods developed during the 7 years where I built the first singing curriculum for the American School of Modern Music (the former affiliate of Berklee) in Paris. Private lessons and courses offered with a good balance between fun and professionalism, because "singing is magic, but it's not rocket science!"
Performances of Note: New Morning, Meridian Jazz Club, Caveaux de la Huchette, Sunside / Sunset, Ranelagh Theater, Sentier des Halles, Avignong & many other festivals in France, Europe, Africa and USA.
Albums: The French Connection - Vol 1 (2013); Sweet Ella (2017)
Educational Activities of Note: development of singing curriculum for ASMM; creation of courses and private lessons for the JVA; cultural ambassador (workshops and concerts) for the US Embassy in France and Africa; accredited teaching artist in Hauts de Seine and by the Nebraska Arts Council

1) "Give someone a fish, they'll eat for a day - teach 'em how to fish, they'll eat forever”
This is a cornerstone of my personal beliefs.
It is more important to me that my students succeed outside the classroom than in. For that, I help them to develop a set of tools, skills, and "tricks" which allow them to be autonomous and make progress even (or especially!) when in the field.
2) "Your agenda is most important - my only 'agenda' is to help you fulfill your own in the most efficient way for both long and short term.”
Whether you wanna sing jazz, fado, punk, classical, soul... I'll help you adapt a basic healthy technique to your approach for any style.
3) "Our body already knows everything we need it to… we've simply forgotten to LET it do it !!!"
So called "head" voice, "chest" voice or "mixed" voice... All are possible for any given human voice.
I therefor work with my students to help them rediscover how to connect with this unconscious knowledge and experience, to uncover a capacity for producing sounds that even they didn't know they were capable of.
4) "Flexibility = Stability", "Efficiency is Beauty" & "Maximum result from Minimal effort”
Nuff said there...
5) "9 times out of 10, the carrot will get you farther than the stick”
I come from the "positive reinforcement" school of educational philosophy. This was how my most effective mentors treated me, and I have seen the most improvement in myself, as in my students, when this attitude is applied.
With each student, I always start by amplifying something that they do well, and use it as a building block for making improvements where needed elsewhere.
I steer clear of any language that implies aggression or force, or notions of "black and white", "right" or "wrong". I prefer terms such as "more efficient", "more beneficial for the long term", etc. I see the learning process as a continuum wherein there is ALWAYS an element of something "right" even when improvements can be made.
If you're looking to be "beat-up" and "disciplined" and "forced" into taking actions that are supposedly "for your own good"... then perhaps it's better to look elsewhere.
Well, those are the basics of my philosophy in any case. The space above being limited... I invite you to visit the Jazz Vocal Academy International website for more details on any of the points above... and more! ;-) Or, even better - let's talk about it "de vive voix"*!
*de vive voix = with lively voice = aka out loud

View more recommendations
