I am passionate about education and helping young learners thrive, my method of teaching revolves around accommodation. Teaching should not be linear and should be flexible to allow students to fully comprehend topics they are learning. I mostly work with elementary students but I have worked with middle school and high school students as well. I would structure a typical 2nd grade math lesson like this: Warm-Up / Review (5–10 minutes) Quick review of previous material (flashcards, mental math, quick questions) Example: "Let's solve 5 addition problems in 2 minutes!" Purpose: Get their brain activated and build confidence. Introduction to Today's Topic (5–10 minutes) Briefly explain the new concept with simple language. Use visuals (number lines, base-ten blocks, drawings) if possible. Example Topics: Adding and subtracting within 100 Place value (hundreds, tens, ones) Introduction to multiplication as repeated addition Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes Money and simple word problems Guided Practice (15–20 minutes) Solve problems together, modeling how to think through each one. Encourage the student to explain their reasoning out loud. Use hands-on activities (dice, coins, counters) if possible. Independent Practice (10–15 minutes) Let the student try a set of problems independently. Monitor their work, step in with questions rather than corrections ("What strategy could help here?"). Wrap-Up and Review (5 minutes) Review the key points of the lesson. Celebrate successes, even small ones! Preview what’s coming next session. For fun: Quick Game at the end (like a math bingo, matching game, or timed challenge) to keep learning fun.
