From sleepy villages to bustling cities,  most can agree that the United Kingdom is a lovely place to live. However, with Brexit on the horizon, the cost of living is set to rise.

As if paying the mortgage, taxes, childcare, and the weekly food bill isn't enough to worry about, there are always those unexpected costs when your boiler goes or the car breaks down.

So what's left for going to the cinema, eating out and holidays?

To solve this problem, many people have turned to tutoring jobs in their free time to top up their income. Teachers especially are favouring tutoring jobs after teaching during the day at school.

What if you used your knowledge to earn some extra money?

Whether you are studying mathematics, play the violin, or know a second language, your knowledge is useful.

So put it to good use!

Schedule a session with learners who need help understanding their trigonometry homework, wish to learn a musical instrument, or would like language tutoring to help with an assignment.

Many people have knowledge that spans several subjects. For instance, a physics tutor may be able to advise GCSE students as a maths tutor, helping with areas such as algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus.

The same goes for a humanities undergrad who ma be able to help with comprehension as a reading tutor and also provide help for college essay writing in their spare time.

Becoming a tutor is all about creating a tailored study plan based on the strengths of your learner. From kindergarten to college level, there are always plenty of people who need your help. Feel the benefits of getting involved in online tutoring or one on one tutoring at home.

Beat Inflation by Becoming a One to One Tutor

We're always hearing about how the cost of living is on the rise.

Did you know that the UK is one of the most expensive places to live?

This infographic published by in 2015 shows that the UK is among the world's most costly countries - the effects of which are felt in all groups of the population (working, unemployed and retired).

As if taxes and National Insurance don't do enough damage to our payslips, we still have to pay the rent, insure the car, and pay the bills.

According to The Guardian, UK rents are expected to rise by 25% in the next five years, impacting families as well as students.

Increasing living and maintenance costs have been creeping in for some time, and have given rise to money problems and debt for many people. According to the Independent, nearly half of graduates who paid £9,000 per year for university tuition are now living with their parents. Of this same group, less than 3% had managed to get on the property ladder.

To keep up with surging prices, there needs to be a bit of extra money coming from somewhere. Some prefer to take out loans to keep their heads above water, others are taking on a second job.

Using your academic skills to help others allows you to gain valuable experience whilst adding to your income. It is also one of the most enjoyable and rewarding options for those looking to earn some more money is to offer tutoring services.

How Tutoring Jobs Can Give You More Financial Freedom

Having tutoring experience on your CV not only makes it stand out to potential employers, who place great value on the skills associated with it, but it can also supplement your income and relieve the everyday stress that comes with money.

Now we've seen the problems of day-to-day life in the UK, let's have a look at solutions to earning that bit of extra money.

Rather than trying to manage two different jobs (or a job while at university) to make ends meet, we advise students to take up in home tutoring.

From humble humanities undergraduates to engineers, to an international student who can teach a foreign language, we all have skills that are worth sharing.

Students are especially useful for helping school pupils to pass exams at GCSE level or entrance exams, for example, since they are familiar with the education system. Earning money through making sure that children are not left behind by their peers and helping them to succeed is an incredibly rewarding and interesting job.

Providing supplemental instruction in the form of home tuition is a way of bridging the gaps left by the school system, which doesn't cater for individual needs. Even tutoring in a small group rather than the large classes you see in school can have a profound effect on the engagement of the learner.

This way, the course content can be adapted to each individual's learning style, so that pupils feel more confident in their own abilities as they fulfil their potential.

How can you say no?

Of course, you won't become a millionaire overnight, but one to one tutoring can significantly change your level of income.

This shows how academic advising can help you manage those difficult few days in the run up to pay day, give you the means to enjoy going out more often, or help you save up for that dream holiday.

So find the English tutor, chemistry tutor, or Spanish tutor in you!

How Much Should You Charge for Private Tuition?

Before you think about sharing your knowledge and study skills in the form of academic tutoring, you should read up on what other people in the business generally charge for one hour. This will help you find your place in the market and, more importantly, know your clientele and be able to find them easily (online or through local advertisements).

It's worth knowing that the cost of private lessons increases with the level of study, rather than just the subject.

According to Superprof data, private tutors in the UK make on average £19.30 per hour. This price varies depending on demand for tuition in certain subjects as well as level of study.

For instance, private maths lessons average at £19.26 per hour, whereas trumpet lessons could set you back £31.40 - because music tuition is more specialised.

Other examples include language tutoring, which costs on average £19.87 for per hour-long lesson, but varies depending on the language being taught. Spanish lessons average at £18.04 while Mandarin tutors earn a higher average hourly rate of £22.90.

Sports coaching and music lessons tend to have a higher value because they are generally extra-curricular activities (not on the school syllabus).

It's all about what people are willing to pay to find a tutor that suits their needs.

This is why the average price of a private music lesson is around £3 more per hour than academic subjects.

However, teaching 'rarer' subjects does not necessarily mean that more money can be earned overall. You will find that higher-paying jobs are harder to come by since they not always essential to the student's academic success.

Keep in mind that subjects are not the only determining factor of what people are willing to pay for private tuition. Age, gender, experience and geographic location can also play a major part in average prices.

Factors Causing Tutoring Fees to Vary

Superprof's data also shows variations in rates between cities and counties as well as a small gap in the earnings of both sexes.

All of these aspects affect the amount of money potential clients are willing to spend on private tuition. This means that they play an important role in setting your prices as a new tutor.

Geographic Location

Let's start with location.

It's no surprise that tutors earn the most money per hour in London (around £22.50).

The home counties are in the next price bracket, with a tutor costing £19.75 in Surrey and £19.26 in Buckinghamshire.

There is no real North-South divide when it comes to tutoring rates, which tend to be elevated in and around major cities such as Manchester (£19.51 per hour), Newcastle (£20.00 per hour) and Birmingham (£19.59).

The Tutoring Pay Gap

The data also shows an interesting, if not unwelcome difference in the earnings of male and female tutors: men charge more for the same services.

Even though the difference is only small (92p per hour), it is still significant.

So, if you're a female tutor who is looking for students, be aware of this gap - but don't let it dictate what you think you should be earning.

Level of Study: Something to Think About

The final factor in setting your rates is the level of study (of the tutor and the tutee).

Unfortunately, we don't have many facts and figures to show you. However, it seems that an hour of private maths tuition for a primary-age pupil would be less costly than an hour of A level maths lessons.

In the first case, you just need the appropriate GCSEs to provide help for a child at primary school. In the second, you need to be qualified enough to be able to answer your student's questions. This example can be applied to all subjects (languages, teaching a musical instrument, and even art lessons).

So although you don't need any formal qualifications, it's important to feel comfortable as an educator.

Now you're more familiar with what you should be charging once you become a private tutor, set your price!
