Alcaraz, whose game stands out for its aggressiveness, speed and maturity, seems destined to lead the new tennis generation. His story is still in the making, and nobody seems able to stop his meteoric ascent - not even Jannik Sinner!

24. Alexia Putellas

Somehow, the world continues to overlook women's sports and women's soccer, in particular. Alexia would like a few words on that subject.

Alèxia Putellas i Segura (born February 1994 in Catalonia) expressed her passion for soccer from a very young age. As a child, she attended even away matches with her father. When she couldn't attend a match in person, she parked herself in front of the tv to watch the action.

She began playing soccer at school; two years later, she signed on with her local junior's club.

Alèxia began her youth career in 2001, at seven years old. She quickly made her way through Barcelona's junior clubs, and then began her senior career (in 2008).

Alexia Putellas

Alèxia is revered as one of the greatest female soccer players of all time. By 2022, she'd won every award a European club player could, and she's nowhere near finished on the pitch. Besides holding her Liga F midfielder position, she captains the team, as well as the Spanish Women's National Team.

22. Elsa Pataky

Despite modeling opposite the likes of Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and other high-profile names, acting remains Elsa's first love.

Elsa Lafuente Medianu, known professionally as Elsa Pataky, was born in July 1976 in Madrid. She reveres her family relations and diverse heritage. Elsa demonstrates those sentiments through her stage name; Rosa Pataky was her maternal grandmother.

Elsa made her love of acting clear while still in school. She quit her studies when she landed a role in the teen drama series, Al salir de clase. Elsa didn't wait long to break into the international acting scene; by 2000, she was working in French, Canadian, and British studios.

With a steady stream of scripts to opt in on, Elsa decided to branch out into modeling.

Elsa Pataky

Since her 2010 marriage to Chris Hemsworth, Australian studios have been keen to feature Elsa in their productions.

Fernando's racing skill is unquestionable, not that any fans of the sport would dare, considering his status as a double world champion.

warning
A thrilling and dangerous career?

Alonso’s most damaging car-related accident happened in a supermarket car park. A car turning into the parking lot knocked him down, which resulted in him needing reconstructive surgery.

20. Pedro Almodóvar

If you're a movie fan, there's a good chance you've seen at least one Almodóvar movie. He's been writing and directing Spanish films for more than 50 years, after all.

Pedro Almodóvar entered this world in September 1949 in the province of Ciudad Real. His humble roots gave no hint that he would become a giant of Spanish cinema, and a filmmaking legend around the world.

While living in his small hometown, he might have entertained his parents' hopes that he enter the priesthood. But they sent him to the city to study when he was eight years old.

Pedro Almodóvar

What he studied the most was films at the local movie theater. From that moment, any idea of taking robes disappeared. He went against his parents' wishes when he moved to Madrid to study filmmaking. He found near-instant success in Spain but it took him a little over a decade to reach global superstardom.

Carlos Sainz
Born:
September 1994 in Madrid

27

The Madrid native started his racing career in karting when he was 12 years old. He's one of the few Spaniards to be part of the Ferrari team, alongside Fernando Alonso, featured above. It's no stretch to say he followed in his father's footsteps, but don't take that allegation too far.

Capitalizing on His Talent

As the son of the successful Carlos Sainz (an icon of rallying karting and double winner of the Dakar Rally), Carlos Sainz Jr. has successfully shaken off the label of nepotism.

17. Clara Campoamor

Often, women today take it for granted that they may have a career, have a bank account in their name, and cast a ballot in elections. We have these rights mainly thanks to trailblazers like Clara.

She was elected to Spain's Constituent Assembly in 1931, before women had the right to vote in that country. She didn't get to hold her seat for long. Just two years later, she lost it as political repression swept the country. She petitioned to join a less vulnerable political party but was denied. Still, she accomplished much during her short tenure, including the right to divorce, equality for children born in and out of wedlock, and women's right to vote.

Clara was politically active during a politically turbulent time. The violence during that period, just ahead of the Second World War, compelled her to flee her homeland.

Clara Campoamor

She lived the rest of her life in exile but remained active in politics throughout. Once Spain transitioned back into democracy, the people heaped accolades and honors on her and her good works.

16. Penélope Cruz

Born in 1974 in Alcobendas, Penélope Cruz is a Spanish actress, model, and designer. She was discovered in 1992 and has acted in roles in both Spain and Hollywood. She was the first Spanish actress to win an Oscar in 2009 for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

She’s also the first Spanish actress to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.

Penélope Cruz is also famous for her charity work. She famously volunteered in Uganda and India with Mother Theresa.

Her earnings from The Hi-Lo Country were donated to Mother Theresa’s mission.

To this day, she is still one of the most popular Spanish-speaking celebrities. The diverse achievements of these famous Spanish people like her reflect the richness of Spain’s cultural heritage.

Cruz talks about her history of performing in ballet and acting.

15. Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas is one of the most well-known actors ever, making him one of the most famous actors from Spain.

Born in Andalusia, Banderas began his acting career in Spain, gaining recognition through a set of films directed by Pedro Almodóvar between 1982 and 1990.

His 1998 role as Zorro solidified his presence in American film culture, and his 2004 voice acting as Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 gained him popularity with a younger audience.

He has been nominated for numerous awards and won a handful over his career.

Sadly, Zafón passed away in 2020 at age 55. He had written 11 novels in his life and his work was well-received and enjoyed.

Across generations, famous people in Spain have shaped how the world sees creativity, leadership, and innovation, just like him. These famous Spanish celebrities have each contributed uniquely to the story of Spain’s influence worldwide, inspiring people to learn more about the Spanish culture and the Spanish language.

10. El Greco

Although born in Crete, Doménikos Theotokópoulos—known globally as El Greco—made Spain his artistic home and legacy. Arriving in Toledo in the late 16th century, El Greco developed a distinctive painting style defined by elongated figures, dramatic lighting, and spiritual intensity.

His masterpieces, such as The Burial of the Count of Orgaz and View of Toledo, have secured his place among the most famous Spanish artists in history.

El Greco’s work was ahead of its time, influencing movements like Expressionism and Cubism centuries later.

He is widely considered one of the most visionary people in Spain, blending Byzantine tradition with Western techniques to create art that transcended its era.

His legacy remains deeply rooted in Spanish cultural history, with his paintings prominently displayed in Spain’s top museums. Among Spain's famous people, El Greco holds a unique place for his fusion of spirituality and artistic innovation, making him one of the most revered Spanish people to shape the country’s artistic identity.

9. Rosalía

A relatively new talent, Rosalía has been described as an “atypical pop star” because of her unique fusion of Spanish folk, flamenco, and avant-pop genres.

She blends flamenco aesthetics with modern arts for amazing visual and audio performances.

8. Queen Isabella I

Queen Isabella I of Castile (1451–1504) was one of the most powerful monarchs in European history and an instrumental figure in the unification of Spain.

Alongside her husband, Ferdinand II of Aragon, she completed the Reconquista, reclaiming the Iberian Peninsula from Moorish rule.

More controversially, she authorized the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of Jews from Spain—decisions that had lasting religious and cultural impacts.

However, her support for Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage ultimately positioned Spain as a dominant global empire. Isabella is undoubtedly one of the most famous Spanish historical figures, and her reign shaped not just the history of Spain but of the world.

Her leadership laid the groundwork for Spain's Golden Age, making her one of the most influential people from Spain. As a monarch, her decisions sparked both exploration and colonization, forever altering the course of history.

7. Francisco Pizarro

Francisco Pizarro, born in 1475, was a Spanish conquistador who conquered the Incan Empire and became governor of Peru (which was called Nueva Castilla at the time). He imprisoned and killed the Incan emperor Atahualpa.

The conquistadors were ruthless and were responsible for reducing the population from 80 million people to 10 million through smallpox and executing those who refused to convert to Catholicism.

Surprisingly, Pizarro wasn’t killed by the Incas but rather by other conquistadors wanting to take his place in 1541.

Spanish history such as this has inspired thousands of people to venture into learning more about history, and learn the Spanish language. There are many courses to learn Spanish throughout the country, both online and face-to-face.

6. General Francisco Franco

Not every famous person is well-known for their good deeds. Francisco Franco is known in history because of his involvement in the Nationalist Party and the fascist dictatorship he created after a Spanish coup d’etat. After the Spanish Civil War, Franco established his dictatorship that lasted for 36 years, until he died in 1975.

Portrait of Francisco Franco
Portrait of Francisco Franco

The Caudillo, as he preferred to be called, was an anti-communist military leader.

As the American historian Robert Paxton explained, Franco was “[v]iruently hostile to democracy, liberalism, secularism, Marxism, and especially Freemasonry.”

Franco’s heritage can still be seen through the presence of the Spanish Monarchy. He named Juan Carlos as the King of Spain. Similarly, while Spain was officially neutral during WWII, Franco was close to both Hitler and Mussolini in Italy.

This resulted in Spain adopting the same time zone as Germany and Italy, to make collaboration easier between the three countries.

In terms of culture, the end of the Francoist regime led to La Movida, the counter-cultural movement that took place during the transition from fascism. It's hard to believe that modern Spain isn't even fifty years old! From royal courts to red carpets, Spain celebrities have long held the spotlight in global culture.

5. Rafael Nadal

Tennis lovers will probably be familiar with Rafael Nadal, the “King of Clay.” Born in 1986 in Mallorca, Nadal is arguably the most famous Spanish tennis player of all time. Few athletes reach the pinnacle of their respective sports, and Nadal has done so time and time again throughout his storied career.

Since going professional in 2001, he’s won 22 Grand Slam titles. It's almost as if the sheer volume of his awards takes away from the significance of each.

You really have to consider the magnitude that even a single one of these has, seeing as few tennis players are talented enough to win a single one of these over the course of their careers.

Rafael Nada

He’s also the only player to have won 14 Roland Garros (French Open) since 2005. That’s not his only record, though:

  • He’s the 7th player in tennis history to achieve the Grand Slam (four major tournament victories in the same year). This was accomplished in 2005.
  • At the 2018 French Open, he set the record for 86 victories and just two defeats.
  • He’s the only player to have won at least one Grand Slam tournament in 10 consecutive seasons.
  • He is the youngest player in the Open Era to win all four majors (at 24 years old).

The list goes on and on...

The most impressive thing in all this? He reached the #1 spot in August 2017 despite playing with an injury for over two years.

4. Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya is regarded as one of the greatest famous Spanish artists in history, often seen as a bridge between the Old Masters and modern art.

Born in 1746, Goya served as a court painter to the Spanish crown but is best known today for his haunting and politically charged works.

Paintings like The Third of May 1808 and his infamous Black Paintings series capture the brutality of war, psychological depth, and the darker aspects of human nature. As one of the most influential people in Spain, Goya’s work challenged traditional aesthetics and inspired countless artists, including Picasso and Manet.

His innovative techniques and willingness to confront social and political realities made him a pioneering figure in art history. Among all Spain famous people, Goya stands out not just for his technical skill, but for his emotional depth and fearless commentary on society.

3. Julio Iglesias

He is the biggest commercial success among Spanish singers, having sold over 150 million records globally, across 14 languages. Iglesias’s rise to fame began when he competed in Eurovision; he quickly captivated audiences and gained recognition in the US. He has even collaborated with other famous stars like Diana Ross.

He was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

That same year was recognized as the best-selling male Latin artist of all time (according to the Guinness Book of Records) and was honored as the most popular international artist in China.

In many countries like Brazil, France, and Italy, he is the most successful foreign record seller and has the most records in history in his home country with 23 million sales.

2. Salvador Dalí

As a painter, sculptor, and writer, Salvador Dali was one of the artists to spearhead the surrealist movement. He was born in Figueras in Catalonia in 1904 and tried his hand at different styles before finding surrealism in 1929.

As a friend of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca and the Mexican director Luis Bunuel, he went to Paris following the advice of Joan Miro to develop the “critical-paranoiac” method.

Ever the controversial figure, he was banned from the group later.

He rode out the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) in exile in Paris and headed to New York during the Second World War.

He made a fortune in the US and moved to Renaissance painting upon his return to Spain in 1948.

1. Pablo Picasso

Few names are as synonymous with modern art as Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous Spanish people to have ever lived.

Born in Málaga in 1881, Picasso’s groundbreaking work spanned multiple styles and periods, including the Blue Period, the Rose Period, and the revolutionary development of Cubism alongside Georges Braque.

His iconic painting Guernica, a harrowing depiction of the bombing of a Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, stands as a powerful anti-war symbol. Picasso’s influence extended beyond painting—he was also a sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist.
