So you are thinking about learning how to roller skate. Maybe it's been a passion or desire of yours for some time and for some reason as a kid you just never got to learn it or no one ever taught you. Or perhaps you are a parent or older sibling that wants to teach your child or younger brother or sister how to roller skate. In any of these cases, it's almost never too early or too late to start roller skating. However there is something important that you should be considering, how much does it cost to roller skate?

In general, you can definitely start to learn roller skating on a budget and not spend that much money, or if you want top-of-the-line stuff, you could end up spending pretty big. There are quite a few things you'll need to get started whether you need to buy something that you 100 percent need (like roller skates, of course) or something that was just advised, like objects for roller skating practice. Each of the things you buy comes with a huge price range. There are cheaper products when it comes to protective gear, roller skates, and accessories, however, there are also high-quality more expensive products.

All in all, you don't need to spend a crazy amount of money as a roller skating beginner, however, it is also fair to know what are the best products out there for you to get. Also, you need to know what you'll need and how much it will cost to start becoming a great roller skater.

How Much Roller Skates Cost

The obvious thing you need to think about buying first if you want to learn how to roller skate are... roller skates! A huge selection of roller skates exist and you can find them online or in quite a few stores that focus on selling sports equipment or athletic apparel. First of all, there is a wide range of prices, as well as brands, and not only this but roller skates that are used for outdoor settings as well as for indoor settings.

If you want brand new outdoor roller skates but a good deal, you can find some roller skates that will cost around seventy to eighty dollars. Top-of-the-line outdoor roller skates can cost you up to nearly five hundred dollars. A piece of advice you probably don't need to spend that much money on your first pair of roller skates but to each their own.

There are also roller skates that are either high top or low top, however, the price does not change that much. Indoor skates have a similar price range as outdoor skates do. Indoor skates would be better suited if you want to head to a roller skating rink rather than skating on a sidewalk or in an outdoor park. Really good pairs of indoor roller skates will on average go for around two hundred dollars. However, of course, you can find a good deal.

If you are on a budget or of course feel you don't want brand new roller skates as these are for learning purposes you can go out and find used roller skates. Sites like Ebay and Craigslist offer used products including roller skates, as well as Amazon. In that way, you can find a perfect pair of skates that can be used while learning and you don't need to worry about ruining them.

Buying Roller Skating Gear and Accessories

Aside from the actual roller skates, there are a number of accessories you'll need as a roller skating beginner. Of course, you will want to protect yourself while learning how to skate, unfortunately, you'll probably find out that falling down is near-inevitable while you're rolling on eight wheels. So let's have a look at how much the essential protective roller skating gear costs.

Helmet

Helmets are essential as a skater from beginner to pro as they protect the most important part of your body, your noggin. You're going to want a good helmet, and in this case, since it is going to cover your head you probably won't want a used one in this case.

A cheaper helmet usually will go for around ten to fifteen dollars, while a helmet that is of great quality can go anywhere from forty to seventy dollars. Even as a beginner it is really important to have a good helmet, also helmets will last a long time so I would recommend spending a bit more on a higher quality helmet.

Elbow and Knee Pads

Elbow and knee pads are also important for learners, especially for children. Of course, children's gear comes at a lower price than equipment for adults. Elbow and knee pads can protect you from nasty falls, as a beginner they're important to keep you safe, and while you are more likely to fall down as a beginner, even professionals know the value of elbow and knee pads.

If one day you get into skating in skateparks on a half-pipe, as you've learned enough to not call yourself a beginner anymore then you would still need to make sure you have elbow and knee pads as the protective gear will make sure you are protected from tearing up your arms on the half-pipe or on hard pavement.

There are few well-known brands for protective gear, which include:

  • 187 Killerc
  • Triple 8
  • FILA
  • Atom Supreme

187 Killer pads offer great quality for protective gear which also means the prices can be a bit higher for some of their higher quality products. Their elbow pads in a general run between 15 and 45 dollars which isn't so expensive. They also offer knee pads that can go anywhere between 40 dollars and 100 dollars. If you are on a budget then this brand offers you a wide variety of options to choose from. In this case, you can probably get away with spending a little less, while for a helmet it is my recommendation to spend a bit more.

Atom Supreme and Triple 8 also offer great products at a slightly lower price than 187 Killer. The product may not be as great, but you will still get a good product for the price you pay making it a better deal. Some pads from Atom Supreme go for lower than thirty dollars and you can also find a pack.

The Cost of Roller Skating Clothes and Fashion

Skating apparel and fashion are not just popular nowadays for skaters but some skating brands are largely popular for just about anyone. The most famous brands you'll see nowadays, especially among teenagers and people in their twenties are:

  • Vans
  • Supreme
  • Converse
  • Element

These brands are great for skaters but have also had huge success in the mainstream market. Perhaps you aren't even a skateboarder or roller skater but like the clothes made for skaters. Wouldn't be a surprise because this stuff is everywhere.

The most famous piece of apparel from these brands has typically been sneakers.

Vans, Supreme, and Converse are the most popular brands and therefore the most expensive. Usually, the prices of new sneakers from Vans, Supreme, and Converse can go anywhere between 80 dollars and 120 dollars. If you look for older pairs then it's definitely possible to find these brands of sneakers that are around 40 to 60 dollars.

Element is usually cheaper than the other brands that I've mentioned. While there are some sneakers that can go for around 90 or 100 dollars, Element does go for around 50 to 70 dollars.

While if you want to really dedicate yourself to the skate lifestyle then the sneakers from these brands are important, however as roller skater sneakers aren't nearly as important, so you should worry more about the comfortable shirts and pants that can be worn.

There are plenty of options of T-shirts and shorts that can be worn and worn comfortably that are sold by Vans, Supreme, etc. While they can be a bit more expensive than other brands the price isn't outrageous, and of course, you'll look cool! Expect to find T-shirts for around 20 to 30 dollars. Also shorts for around the same price more or less.

Finding Help for Skating as a Beginner

While knowing what to buy and your options and prices is extremely important, actually putting your feet in the skates and learning how to skate is the most important step. For this, if you need help getting started you can find private roller skating teachers on Superprof. The teachers at Superprof can help you not only in giving you advice for what gear and skates to buy but also how to get started as in roller skating.
