Equipment and Accessories that Will Make Learning Easier and More Comfortable

As far as tips go a great tip for you would be to let you know what things you can buy to make learning to skate much easier. There are also things that you can get or wear that will make skating much more comfortable in other words clothes and apparel used for roller skating.

Skating Equipment

Making sure you get the proper roller skating equipment will help you to learn faster and stay safe while learning how to roller skate. There are many types of equipment that can make your life much easier when you head out to the street or if you travel to a skatepark.

Roller Skating Bag

If you want to go to a specific place to roller skate not just starting from your front door, then investing in a roller skating bag to carry your skates in will be a huge help and convenience for you. Since you will likely go to a park to skate to practice it would obviously be easier for you to just simply walk over to the park in your sneakers or shoes rather than try to skate there, that's where the bag comes in. There are a variety of different bags and different styles for you to choose from.

Wear Your Protective Gear

While it may not seem cool to do so, you should wear your protective gear, in other words, your helmet, and knee pads, and shoulder pads. Part of learning to roller skate as a beginner means you will be falling down and protecting yourself with helmets and pads will save yourself from a lot of physical pain as well as frustration.

If you decide to roller skate at night also make sure you wear something that is reflective for people who may be approaching you in a car or on another vehicle.

Roller Skating Clothes

There is also plenty of different apparel that you can choose to wear that is specifically designed for skaters, whether they are for skateboarders or roller skaters, the clothes made by some skating brands make skating at least somewhat easier. Wearing a polo shirt as a beginner or a button-up shirt is probably not the best idea. After you have practiced for a long time you can skate in a tuxedo if you'd like! However, until then skating apparel is the best choice.

If you don't want to buy skating shirts or pants from brands such as Vans or Supreme you can always use the clothes you would normally wear to the gym. The point is to be as comfortable as possible and a great tip is to wear athletic gear or skate apparel.

Roller Skating Advice for Beginners

Body Posture

Something that you may not have considered about skating and later will find out is probably the first thing you will need to correct is your body posture while skating. It's normal for a beginner to be really nervous the first time they skate and will try to do everything they can to not fall over.

Unfortunately because of this many beginners end up keeping their legs stiff which makes it much harder to move on roller skates. Learning how to Bend your knees will be extremely important when it comes to learning how to skate. Relaxing and making sure you bend your knees as you move will make it much easier for you to learn and to move faster on your skates.

Learn to Do The Skater Step

Another common mistake for beginners is trying to imitate the movement of walking. On wheels, you're going to have to be moving quite a bit differently. You do not want to try to imitate walking if you try to do that you will definitely fall down more times than move forward.

What you need to do is make sure you start with your feet pointed outwards then left a leg up and start to go forward and glide a bit, then continue with your other foot, always remembering the body posture you need to have to go forward.

Learn How to Fall

I mention falling a lot, as well as protecting yourself. This is because it is a near-inevitable part of the process and it is extremely important to know how to fall correctly. Bending your knees is again important, if you do happen to fall then falling from the lowest position possible is always going to help.

Braking

Learning how to brake to avoid falling or going too fast is also an extremely important piece of advice. You should learn how to stop skating in an instant. A very good way of doing this is called a "T-Stop". You can greatly reduce your speed quickly by moving one of your feet behind the other foot in a way that your feet are shaped like a T. I do not recommend using the brake in front of the wheels.

Roller Skating Exercises for Beginners

Practice makes perfect. There are many different exercises you can do at the park or an area where you have space to practice roller skating. If you want to develop your skills you can practice these exercises.

Interval Training

Interval training is great after you've practiced a bit and now just need to practice going at a faster speed. For some minutes you can get slower than for another 10 or 15 minutes go as fast as you can, then slower again, then faster. To get the hang of moving faster on roller skates this is a great exercise to do.

Cone Skating

Just like for sports that you would play with a ball like a soccer or basketball cones can come in handy as great obstacles. If you place cones in your path you can practice turning and swerving which is very important for learning how to roller skate.

Setting up different obstacle paths when you are learning can be a great way to improve your agility in your roller skates, all you need to do is find some traffic cones.
