About Francis
Hi my name is Francis. I ma a classically trained guitar player. I have my Royal Conservatory of Music Gr.2 Rudiments and grades 1/6 practical classical guitar exams. I received silver medals (highest mark in Ontario) for both these exams. I have taught privately and at Walter Ostanek's Music since the early 1980's. I can teach all styles of guitar, theory as well as harmony, vocal coaching and exam preparation for entrance exams to college or university. My track record for college preps is excellent. My style of teaching is unconventional and focuses on understanding the concept and not just repetition of an exercise. I like to take a light-hearted approach to instruction due to the strictness of my original training. A manager at Ostanek's quoted me in an ad saying "We put the fun back into music lessons", and this was the premise of the teaching department for many years.

For college preparation exams, 'The Barbara Harris' books are a must as they cover all aspects of basic rudiments in one source. For classical guitar: Aaron Shearer method, the R.C.M. grades 1-10 and scale book and supplementary exercises not in the books (eg, 120 Guiliani studies for guitar). For jazz, there are many books available, but I find the 'Berklee College' method are the most comprehensive. However jazz is ear training and jumping in learning tunes from 'lead sheets (aka FakeBooks) is a must and as soon as possible. For all other styles, I have my way of approaching those. It includes basic theory concepts as well as necessary exercises to do, but focuses on learning tunes that the 'student' wants to learn and not songs I think they should know.
