About Jenna

I have a Master’s degree in English with a specialty in writing studies, and I have taught writing classes and tutored writers at both the high school and college levels. As a writing instructor, I have spent the past four years teaching first-year college students the genre of college essay writing, as well as how to conduct research, to write longer essays, and to improve the clarity of their writing. Before teaching college writing classes, I tutored college students in a University Writing Center, providing one-on-one support to undergraduate and graduate student writers at any stage in their writing process, from brainstorming a topic, to refining a final draft. Though I specialized in writing during graduate school, my love for english began with literature. Given that I also hold a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Humanities, I am able to provide lessons in english language and literature as well as writing. While I have most recently worked with college students, I also have experience teaching and tutoring high school students online and in-person, individually and in groups. Given my experience, I am able (and excited) to offer english and writing lessons to high school and college-aged learners in either an online or in-person format. I am able to assist students with their current projects and/or create lesson plans for students who want to develop specific skills.

Central to my teaching philosophy is my belief in the value of meeting students where they are, that is, in the value of making content relevant to students so that they are excited about learning, and in adjusting instruction to best serve the needs and strengths of individual students. I strongly believe in the value of helping a student through a problem, rather than simply telling them the answer. In order to do so, I always demonstrate a concept, then also coach the student through applying that concept themselves to their own writing. Breaking down a task into multiple steps in which the student takes on increasing responsibility and independence throughout the process, also known as scaffolding, is a recurring feature throughout my teaching for which students repeatedly express appreciation. To scaffold an essay assignment, for example, I would first teach the student brainstorming strategies, then have them practice those strategies to develop ideas for their own essay, then continue to coach the student through drafting their essay and then revising that draft over multiple weeks. This scaffolding approach helps students to practice and refine using writing strategies and also models for students how they can break down a project into manageable chunks, a valuable time management skill. My ultimate goal when teaching writing is to show my students how writing is already integral to their lives through social media posts, emails, texts, etc., and to teach them tools and strategies that can clarify and strengthen the message that they aim to deliver in their writing in order to improve their communication skills, not just their grammar!
