About Sebastian
I have been tutoring students ages 11-18 in history, test prep and English/writing composition on and off for 10 years. Because I work with students on the basis of their personal needs and strengths, I have been able to help them raise their scores at least one letter grade (overall average), ace tests and Regents exams, and as a result, graduate after being held back for a number of years. Best of all, I have helped all students I've worked with regain confidence in themselves, and develop a fondness for their school work.

My teaching method is completely based on the needs and desires of the student. Everybody learns in a different way, and I take pleasure in collaborating with students on a course of action for methods and plans. I am well-versed in teaching around a number of learning disabilities, as I live with some myself, and so it is easy for me to take a compassionate approach that motivates the student and focuses on their strengths.
I believe in doing anything I can to help the material be more accessible to the student. Whether it be through reading out loud to the student, sending them written notes, or helping them develop a color or symbol coded system for organizational and memorization purposes, I am always happy to work on finding a way to make the information stick. I am aware that curriculum is not always presented in a way that makes sense for everyone, and so I love the challenge of finding one particular student's style of learning in order to tailor the lesson plan to their needs. My classroom is a no judgment zone, where strengths are focused and amplified, and praise is frequent. Learning and matters which involve tutoring can be stressful, but I work to help the student feel as relaxed and confident as can be.
