In a learning-centered institution, the student is the major focus, and education should be directed toward all levels of society. Our world is a diverse world full of many cultures and learning styles and levels. We must educate everyone as best we can; this is part of what a learning-centered institution is and does. This author’s philosophical assumptions include idealism and the fact that all students can be led to higher learning. Understanding these common elements allows teachers to theorize and generalize about educational situations and problems. This is basic to forming a teaching theory (Gutek, 2004, p. 238). It is also basic to understanding the importance of educating all people. Educators are here for students, so teachers need to understand their students. Ideally, teachers “must assist students in developing to their potential and achieving their fullest…intellectual growth” (Gutek, 2004, p. 21). This applies to the whole of society and all its diversity. In turn, a learning-centered institution is student focused.
