About RJ
I graduated from Harvard University in 2008 with a degree in English. After that, I spent several years working in publishing houses starting graduate school at Princeton University, where I earned my Ph.D. in 2021. Since then I have taught at Baruch College, CUNY (City University of New York) and Hofstra University Honors College. While at Princeton, I had the honor of taking part in the Prison Teaching Initiative, teaching literature and essay-writing inside of prisons. My great pride and joy is leading reading groups, not just as a way of promoting humanities education, but also, most importantly, of building community.

If you know the "Why?", you can always find the "How"! So said Nietzsche, who understood that human beings naturally do well at things if we see a purpose in them. That's why for me, teaching begins with asking questions. Who is my student? What are they excited about? What are they afraid of? What do they care about? What do they need help with? What's their style--in learning, but also in understanding the world? How can I meet my student, not just as a grade-earner, but as a person living in a demanding and chaotic world? How can education help us bring well-being and understanding to ourselves and our world? Education is about helping us become our most fully realized self. School, success, grades, all come naturally when you know who you are and what you stand for. We learn about ourselves through languages, native as well as new. We learn through literature, from the simplest children's books through the longest novels and densest poems. I bring to lessons over a decade of experience teaching in college classrooms from CUNY to Princeton. Previous students include a Rhodes Scholar, a University of Tokyo Fellowship winner, and Princeton's 2017 valedictorian. I take pride in every one of my students and hope you'll let me be of service to you on the path of education!

I was really struggling with my writing before I met RJ. They then sat me down and really walked through my writing to help me understand how to edit for clarity, precision, and tone. They’ve been instrumental in my own intellectual development and have opened my mind up to new ways of thinking. You’re not just getting a tutor with RJ - you’re getting a thought partner who will leave you with the right tools to forge ahead independently after.
RJ (or Bergmann, as I know them) is a deeply insightful, unswervingly compassionate teacher, musician, artisan, artist, and friend. They are a person of enormous wit and humor. Bergmann helped me with the assignment of reading George Eliot’s book Felix Holt, the Radical. I was woefully unprepared for this book. What was going on in Regency period England during the time this book is set? What are all these big, strange words and turns-of-phrase? Did I interpret this scene correctly? Who was that character again? Why are they important? Bergmann had the answer to my questions, but perhaps more importantly, didn’t lecture or hand those answers to me but drew the answers out of me by asking more questions. In the past it has often felt to me like a nuisance to be given a 150+ year-old book and asked to interpret and comprehend words and thoughts which I entirely lack the context needed to understand. It’s a relief to then learn the skills to understand such a book. It is thrilling to realize part of the way through that not only do I understand this book, but I love it. None of that was possible without Bergmann. So, sure, have them teach you if you want to sharpen academic skills, but for goodness sake, have them teach you if you want to enrich your life and appreciation of literature!
