About Hillary
I have been teaching English in public and charter schools for nearly 18 years. At this point, I have taught over 2,000 students!
What that means for you is that I know where understanding breaks down for students. My job is to then figure out WHY and create a roadmap to get from where we are to where we want to be.
I focus on helping students recognize patterns and give them strategies that they can apply to the NEXT time they encounter academic challenges.
Then we refine them together.

English class can be rough for students in grades 6-12 because if they fall behind, there's no easy way to get back on track built in (like in elementary school), AND it's hard to get better because the teacher is usually teaching the kids "in the middle".
I can offer help with some of the following things (and more! just ask):
- low reading level
- trouble getting started with essays
- homework help
- writing with patterns you can replicate
- reading comprehension
- college essay planning and editing
- test prep/doing better on the ACT and SAT
- getting through a rough English class
Some other things I have experience with that may not be so easily quantifiable:
- goal setting with older high school students, especially if they aren't college-bound
- resume writing for students and the "newly graduated"
- helping students who struggle with word problems in math (it's actually more about literacy!)
I focus on helping kids break down tasks and approach them in a way that meets their needs - which is highly individual. Then we work with patterns to ensure they know how to apply what they learn with me to new tasks.
