About Jim
Hi, my name is Jim Drohan. I am from Denver, Colorado and have been teaching English courses around Colorado since 1986 – all levels from 6th grade through college. Born in Maryland into a military family, I grew up all around the US – and Korea – then joined the Air Force after graduation. My first year of college was at the US Air Force Academy, then I finished up my bachelor’s degree (English) at the University of Northern Colorado, graduating in 1982 then earning a master’s degree (English) from there in 1995. My passion has always been teaching, as I enjoy people and like helping them succeed. Tennis, traveling, biking and hiking in the Rockies, and attending music concerts and stand-up comedians are some of my interests. I’m divorced and have four children – all grown up – who are spread out over the four corners of this country (thus my traveling pastime). I feel that one of the greatest rewards teachers can receive is to see, as a result of their teaching, students turned on to something for the first time, such as reading, writing, sharing ideas, voicing opinions, appreciating literature, etc. This kind of spark can billow into a lifelong love for learning, which far outweighs any grade given or commendation received. I’m excited to be a part of your journey and look forward to meeting you. I recently traded the blizzards for the beaches and moved to Ft. Myers, Florida where I am learning what humidity is (and hurricanes). No snow here though!

I am positive that my history of teaching English, instructional abilities, work ethic, and interpersonal talents would benefit students and leave them with more than just a solid foundation in English.
As a teacher, it is my duty – and pleasure – to instill in students a fresh and enduring appreciation for reading, writing, and sharing ideas. I aim to inspire students toward an excitement for language arts – a respect and an appreciation they may have never experienced. I strive to teach students to learn to love learning throughout their lives. I have been teaching students for the last 37 years and have a strong passion for it, especially for generating new ideas and finding ways to incorporate students’ interests and current events into lessons. I have taught a variety of English courses at Colorado schools at elementary, middle school, high school and college levels. I have been teaching English composition courses, exclusively online, for PIMA Medical Institute for the last three years.
I believe that teachers do much more than teach academics: we develop the character of our students, directing the future. We foster ideals that promote integrity, compassion for others, motivation, an appreciation for knowledge, and respect for individual differences. We model and teach inspiration, realizing that success is achieved in ways beyond solely academic. At best, we help people learn to enjoy learning, as they pursue happiness on their terms.
I hope to continue to be a positive influence on students and help them face the future with strong academic, social, and practical skills, as well as an optimistic attitude. Please contact me any time. Thank you for your consideration.
