About Elizabeth
I'm a professional writer with a background in tutoring at the high school and college level. Right out of college (Cornell University, BA in Classical Civilization), I took a job as a test prep tutor; for the next two years, I worked on SAT/ACT prep with a side of subject tests for flavor. Then I worked as a freelance writer to put myself through my MA program at the University of Chicago. As a grad student, I was really involved in the UChicago writing center - I worked as a tutor in the first-year writing program and helped out with a lot of special projects, like helping STEM students with their grant proposals. After I graduated, I took a "real job" as a legal/technical writer, which is where I am right now. I'm also an assistant editor at a writing center studies journal, so I've kept up with the fine art of leaving feedback that makes an essay better without being discouraging for the writer.

I've worked with students in grade 4 through the Ph.D. level, and I'm always happy to work with anyone who wants to be a stronger writer. I think my job as a tutor is to help students think through problems or frustrations and come to their own solutions - I usually do a lot of asking questions and understanding what the student's own goals for his/her paper are. I really enjoy helping students figure out what work each part of an essay is doing and how to organize and connect ideas to make a strong argument in their papers.
I'm comfortable with the formal academic essay style, but I'm also mindful that isn't always the best way to make a particular point - I'm a writer myself, but I definitely don't write any 5-paragraph essays in my day job!
I do have a lot of students who ask for help with spelling and grammar, and I'm happy to help with those as well, but I don't just "fix the paper" for students - if you ask me about a grammar mistake, you're going to get an explanation of the concept and then we're going to work together to find the correct wording.
