About Mert
As an independent educational consultant, I work directly with students and their families during the entire university admissions process for both UK and US institutions. My mission is to provide informed and customized advice about the increasingly complex world of admissions and to create an environment in which thoughtful decisions can be made about university preparation and attendance.
I am a fully certified British Council Counsellor, an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, an individual member of International Association for College Admission Counseling, and a graduate of the IECA’s Summer Training Institute. I earned my B.A. in English Literature and Political Science from Yale University and my M.Phil. in English Literature from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where I am a currently a Ph.D. candidate and contribute to undergraduate teaching.
Throughout my career, I have acquired and shared with my students the tools necessary to demystify the nuances of the university admissions process. I bring to my educational consulting practice both my expertise in research, teaching, and writing, and my strong knowledge of the admissions process, undergraduate institutions, and current trends in higher education.
As a former Yale interviewer, I gained unique insights about the evolving landscape of university admissions. I also worked as a writing tutor at Yale and have nurtured a robust background in journalism and literary consulting. The combination of these experiences has led me to develop my own methodology for guiding university-bound students in crafting compelling and authentic applications.
I offer expert support in the following areas.
Student Assessment and Profile Building:
• Evaluating the student’s academic history, interests, and skills
• Identifying the student’s strengths and areas for improvement
• Advising the student on course selection and how best to take advantage of academic opportunities both in and out of school
• Exploring extracurricular, leadership, and community service opportunities
• Developing a timeline for standardized testing (e.g., SAT, ACT, AP, IB) and crafting an appropriate test preparation strategy
• Discussing how the student can make the most of summer breaks (e.g., summer programs, internships, employment, research projects) and supporting the student in pertinent applications
The University List:
• Creating a customized list of key university criteria based on the student’s interests and preferences
• Educating the student and the family on how to research, evaluate, and compare institutions, whether online or through campus visits
• Advising the student and the family about the essentials of visiting university campuses and corresponding with admissions officers
• Sharing best practices for making use of the resources offered by universities, displaying “demonstrated interest,” and interacting with college representatives and special-interest faculty
• Curating a balanced list of prospective universities and degree courses that are the right “fit” for the student (academically, socially, and financially)
Applications:
• Considering application plans (e.g., RD, ED, EA, REA, rolling, open) and platforms (e.g., Common Application, Coalition Application, UC Application, UCAS)
• Creating an application completion timeline and keeping track of its progress
• Supporting the student in résumé preparation
• Advising the student on choosing teachers to ask for letters of recommendation
• Ensuring that all components of a given application work together to present a strong portrait of the student
• Reviewing applications to confirm that they have been prepared fully and in advance of deadlines
Personal Essays, Statements, and Writing Supplements:
• Incentivizing the student to approach the writing process in an organized and positive manner
• Mentoring the student through the entire process of composition for each of the writing questions: brainstorming original topics and approaches, outlining, drafting, editing, and proofreading
• Helping the student find their voice and present themselves authentically, confidently, and memorably through exceptional essays
Interviews:
• Preparing the student for any interviews with alumni, admissions officers, or faculty (including Oxbridge interviews)
• Conducting mock interviews and offering constructive feedback
• Sharing tips about follow-up practices
In addition, due to my academic specialism in English literature, I am able and happy to provide tutoring support to students preparing for English admission tests, IB English, and AP English.
