Grades 1-6 Reading and Writing Lesson Plan: Introduction to Main Idea and Supporting Details
Time Breakdown (60 minutes)
• Introduction and Warm-up (10 minutes)
• Main Concept Explanation (15 minutes)
• Guided Practice (20 minutes)
• Independent Practice (10 minutes)
• Review and Wrap-up (5 minutes)
Objectives

Introduction and Critical Thinking
Start with this engaging analogy: "Think of the main idea like the umbrella that covers all the other details in a paragraph. Just like an umbrella protects us from rain, the main idea helps us understand what the whole paragraph is about."
Step by Step Explanation
1. Finding the Main Idea
• The main idea tells what the text is mostly about
• Often found in the first or last sentence of a paragraph
• Answers the question: "What is the author trying to tell me?"
2. Identifying Supporting Details
• Supporting details give more information about the main idea
• Include examples, facts, or descriptions
• Help explain or prove the main idea
Example Paragraph
Dogs make wonderful pets. They are loyal companions who love to play with their owners. Dogs can learn tricks and help guard the house. They also show affection by wagging their tails and giving kisses. Best of all, dogs can be trained to follow commands and behave well.
Analysis
• Main Idea: Dogs make wonderful pets (first sentence)
• Supporting Details: (three to five sentences)
Reflection Questions
• Why is it important to be able to find the main idea in a paragraph?
• How do supporting details help us better understand the main idea?
Wrap-Up and Next Steps
• Summarize key concepts.
• Assign homework and practice problems. (Optional)
• Schedule for the next tutoring session.
• Provide encouragement and a friendly goodbye!
• Write a summary of the student's progress, topics covered, areas of
strength, and any assigned homework.
