About Sarah
Passionate about literature and language since my teens, I studied English at university in Oxford and London, but also areas of Latin, Classics and History, which have all enhanced my knowledge and understanding of my core subject. The fascinating world my own learning introduced me to was what made me want to teach. I knew that I wanted to enable others to share the experience of the amazing world of language and expression, and above all to develop their own skills of communication, which is the at the heart of why we all need to develop our skills in this key subject.
I have worked in schools since I finished my Masters Degree, but in order to pursue my own academic research I have recently moved into the more flexible world of tutoring, and I have learnt two important things. Firstly, teaching one-to-one is the most rewarding and effectively collaborative work that I have done and secondly, that going back to being a student myself has made me a better and more reflective teacher.
I teach online as this allows greater flexibility with both location of students and the timing of sessions, and with use of highly effective online systems in the last few years, I find this also allows me to have more flexibility with teaching materials and communication tools, whilst still being able to have effective contact and to develop a good working relationship with students.

Commitment and Enjoyment
Students do best in English (both Language and Literature) when they are motivated and enthused, and finding ways to engage individual interest and focus is at the heart of my one hour online tutorials. Getting to know individuals is key: working to their strengths while developing and supporting weaker areas. Sessions are aimed at developing understanding and skills through discussion, questioning and short practices, and provide immediate feedback on progress. I can also provide assessment feedback and guidance on work completed outside lessons.
Experience and Range
Having worked for over twenty-five years in a range of private schools both teaching English, leading a department and in school leadership, as well as tutoring individuals throughout that time, enables me to provide both expert subject knowledge but also support for pupils of all levels of ability. I can provide tutoring for GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and IB, support with 13+ and 16+ school entrance, and also university application and preparation for English and related Arts and Humanities subjects.
Variety and Flexibility
Flexible tutoring, using my very broad teaching experience and expert subject knowledge, means that I will develop sessions and programmes of study that meet each individual’s needs. This can be either a completely bespoke course, or tutorials that support curricular learning and respond to the particular needs of students at particular times, or a combination of the two.
Typical Provision
For English Language study I would commonly use the anlysis of model examples, meetings. Wide range of writing and the work of skilful writers, working towards students learning skills and practising techniques both their own writing and their analysis
In Literature areas most commonly studied are close textual reading, contextual understanding and different interpretations
At advanced levels I can offer support specifically related to a course of study but also can work on wider reading and literary/historical understanding which helps to develop broader skills.
