About Alex

Having studied literature for over a decade at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world I understand what is needed to pass the highest levels of exams, and produce high quality work. Equally, having struggled to grasp some of the higher concept parts of literature in my early years, I understand what it's like to 'not get it' and can work with you closely to make it click.

Alex’s teaching style is encouraging yet challenging, he wants students to strive toward high quality work whilst enjoying the freedom of expression that accompanies creative writing. Many assignments will include the student producing their own writing as this is one of the best ways to understand the mechanisms behind the art and craft of writing. When it comes to dissecting the great texts, Alex practices a blend of close sentence reading and wider contextual research. This means students not only understand what the author is doing on the page to conjure the magical illusion of story, but also the texture of the times in which the piece is being written and how the text aligns or contradicts with the broader discourse.
