About Krutarth

I am a percussionist from India, currently based in Canada, with 18 years of dedicated training in Tabla. Though I come from a non-musical background, my rhythmic instincts surfaced early—I began tapping on surfaces as a child and formally started learning Indian classical music at the age of seven. Over the years, my passion for percussion deepened through listening to the sounds of nature and legendary maestros. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Tabla from Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad University (2011) and a Bachelor's in Music from Bruhad Gujarat Gandharva Mahavidyalaya (2015). I later pursued a Master’s in Industrial Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada (2022). My journey has taken me across various platforms, including performances at festivals in India and a Guinness World Record event, “The World Culture Festival” by Art of Living in 2016. I’ve contributed percussion to traditional Gujarati folk music, devotional events like Sundarkand and Bhajans, and performed regularly during Navratri festivals since 2010. I've collaborated with prominent state artists such as Vatsala Patil, Gautam Dabir, and Kirti Sahay, and worked with bands like Tarang, Avant-Garde, The Unplugged Ocean, Leher, and DJs like DJ Zark. I am a featured artist at CBC news. As a recording artist, I’ve contributed to original tracks and covers for global artists and labels. Notable projects include: Speak to Me Dear by Dan Barracuda Following the Green Path by Xkliber Les Petits Cœurs de Beurre (Collective Music Charity) Tabla Matrix by Tabla 256 (my personal composition) My training began under Rohan Sant and continued with Bhavin Negandhi, Anil Gandhi, Deepak Solanki, and Dr. Chirayu Bhole—under whom I continue to learn today. Dr. Bhole, a disciple of Prof. Sudhir Kumar Saxena and Pandit Yogesh Samsi, has greatly influenced my approach in Ajrada and Punjab Gharanas. I’ve participated in national-level workshops with greats like Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, Pandit Yogesh Samsi, and Pandit Amod Dandge, and had the honor of attending live performances and meeting Ustad Zakir Hussain. Since the age of 16, I’ve performed at various events and venues. After moving to Canada in 2021, I’ve conducted workshops at the University of Windsor and University of Waterloo, and performed fusion music across venues like India 47 and India Paradise, as well as with local DJs and artists including DJ Danny, DJ Stylz, Josh Johnson, and Roy Clarke. As a teacher since 2014, I’ve trained over 50 students in India, the U.S., and Canada through online, offline, and group sessions. I teach all age groups, with tailored approaches—online classes recommended for children 8+, and offline sessions starting from age 5. I offer certification up to the Visharad level, equivalent to a music degree. Teaching, for me, goes beyond structured lessons. I mentor students even outside formal classes, guiding them whenever they need support in their musical journey. I believe learning music is a lifelong process—and I remain a student myself.

My teaching methodology emphasizes 70% Indian classical tabla training, complemented by 30% application through playing songs and learning Indian rhythms—right from the very first class. Students initially receive PDF notes covering all essential taals, their variations, and foundational kayadas, until they develop a clear understanding of bols, phrases, and the structural framework of taals. However, I strongly encourage active, spontaneous learning; it’s far more beneficial to write and internalize the material than to passively rely on handouts. Each session is predominantly practical in nature. If a student is unable to write notes during class, I personally transcribe and share them. I also take time to understand each student’s motivation for learning tabla and tailor a personalized training plan accordingly. Every new concept is revised during the first five minutes of the next class. If any doubts arise, we dive deeper into the topic to ensure clarity and mastery. There are four sessions each month. At the end of every month, students take a short assessment—either scheduled or given as a surprise—that lasts no longer than ten minutes and takes place during the final class. I also maintain open communication with parents, offering progress updates either upon request or whenever I feel it’s necessary. Students are given specific phrases to practice, and I emphasize the importance of consistent, sincere practice to achieve meaningful results. One of the most rewarding aspects of my training is that, within just six months to a year—depending on the student's dedication and consistent effort—they are often able to compose their own pieces, a skill that also supports broader musical composition abilities. For new learners, we offer a complimentary 30-minute demo session or a low-cost extended demo, depending on the desired duration. I have great faith in my students, and together, we have witnessed remarkable progress. Once or twice a year, we host online meetups—based on student availability—where learners perform a piece of their choice, whether a song accompaniment or a classical tabla solo. We also maintain a group where students freely share practice videos, audio clips, and creative ideas. I actively engage in the group, offering constructive feedback to support their growth.
