What Are Percentiles?

The percentile is a statistical measure which divides a series of data ordered from smallest to largest into one hundred equal parts. It is an indicator that seeks to show the proportion of the data series that falls below its value.

Percentiles give the values corresponding to , … and of the data.

Calculation of Percentiles

First we look for the class where we found in the cumulative frequency table.

Where:

  •  is the lower limit of the class where the percentile is found
  • is the sum of the absolute frequencies
  • is the cumulative frequency before the percentile class
  • is the class width

Percentile Exercise

1 Calculate the and percentile of the distribution in the table:

First we will create a new column with the cumulative frequency values:

In the first cell we place the first absolute frequency. In the second cell we add the value of the previous cumulative frequency plus the corresponding absolute frequency and so on until the last one, which must equal

Calculation of the 35th Percentile

We look for the interval where the percentile is found, multiplying by and dividing by

We look in the cumulative frequency column for the interval that contains

The class of is:

We will apply the formula for calculating percentiles for grouped data, extracting the following data:

Calculation of the 60th Percentile

We look for the interval where the percentile is found, multiplying by and dividing by

We look in the cumulative frequency column for the interval that contains

The class of is:

We will apply the formula for calculating percentiles for grouped data, extracting the following data:
