About Matthew
I earned 3 degrees in English Literature with top grades. In graduate school, I got an A on every single essay I wrote but one. I can show any student the top-notch reading, study, research and writing skills I used to do this. When I graduated, I decided the most useful thing I could do would be to teach others how to read and write effectively, and I did so for the next twenty years (1996 to 2016). In that time I worked with middle school, high school and college freshman students. I then spent the next six years writing three scholarly books on comparative religion, and the last two years writing a spiritual autobiography. I am an expert at shaping information to suit my audience, and whatever your level of competence I will address you on that level and move forward from there.

To improve literacy skills at your level, I start with an ungraded entry-level exam that shows me exactly how you need to improve. I then develop a Personal Plan that is customized to your needs. You will read, write and do exercises. I will count how many of each error you make, and focus your Personal Plan on the mistakes you make most frequently. This covers reading speed, use of research, spelling, grammar, syntax, paragraphing, use of rhetoric, focus on a main idea and style. Because my offering is shaped by your needs, and because I have a PhD in English Literature and have written three scholarly books and an autobiography, I can help a student at any level of competence. We just figure out together what you need, and I provide it. We move at your best speed to succeed. I spent 20 years developing this system in 1-on-1 and classroom situations. It really works, because most students are only making a few mistakes, but keep making them over and over so it looks like a lot of mistakes. My way, we identify the problems that keep happening and tackle them first.
