About Maderlin

I'm nerd of the highest order and always have been. I love nothing more than writing some fanfiction as I do love to practise my creative writing skills and as a fan of science fiction and horror this gives me a great audience and sounding board (I also think you should practise what you preach). I am tutoring as, in my current role, I am in front of students a lot less than I have been in the past, only teaching around 16 lessons a week when previously I have taught 22. I love interactions with students and being able to see them thrive so this gives me that alongside my classroom teaching and management responsibilities.

About the lesson

I have been teaching English for 20 years and am currently working as a Director of Communication and Enquiry with responsibility for the English and MFL departments. Throughout that time I have ensured that my students achieve at least their Target Grades and usually much better. I have an outstanding background in taking students with a Target of 7 and getting them to a 9 through a variety of teaching styles. I use a variety of teaching techniques, from using questioning, modelling responses, reworking questions together and the essential need to plan thoroughly in order to order your thoughts. I come to lessons with a host of resources including booklets, background activities and a strong focus on the cultural capital needed by students to get the most out of the texts that they are studying. I would typically teach a 60 minute lesson tailored to the specific needs of the particular student which I would assess in our opening session with a short baseline assessment and then each lesson would have periods of checking in to ensure that ideas are being embedded. I would also encourage students to send me any essays they have written and had marked or issues brought up in class that we can work on together. I am extremely experienced with AQA GCSE, having built the curriculum taken in my school. I am well versed in all the studied texts for Literature and love teaching the key skills and approaches for the Language paper. I have experience with AQA A-Level Literature with a focus on: A Streetcar Named Desire, The Handmaid's Tale and 1984. I am also available to work with KS3 students who may be struggling with the basics of structure and comprehension in order to give them the confidence that they need.
