Read what each price covers before you compare. The Refrigeration School’s $19,000 already includes materials, equipment, and safety gear. Chemeketa’s figures cover tuition and fees only, so books and tools come on top. The best value is the program with the lowest full cost for the skills you need.
What Does Each Type of Welding Program Cost?
The type of school shapes your cost more than anything else. Public colleges charge by the credit, while private welding schools usually quote one price for an intensive program. Apprenticeships work differently again, since you earn a wage while you learn.
Community Colleges
Community colleges are the most affordable route in our sample. At Alvin Community College, the first welding certificate costs $1,986 for in-district students and $3,159 for out-of-district students. The school’s associate degree costs $4,975 in-district and $8,035 out-of-district, plus a tool kit of about $1,600.
Residency matters, so check which rate applies to you. Program length matters too. Chemeketa Community College in Oregon lists $4,035 for a short arc welding certificate, $9,483 for a 10-month certificate, and $16,574 for a 21-month degree.
Private Welding Schools
Private welding schools pack more shop time into fewer months. Arkansas Welding Academy’s program runs 26 weeks and 910 clock hours, with 830 of those hours in the lab. Its $18,713 in tuition and fees comes with a further $11,097 for equipment and supplies.
Some private schools bundle more into one price. Western Welding Academy lists $17,050 for its 12-week foundational pipe welding course, with housing and gear included. The Refrigeration School in Arizona quotes $19,000 for its welding program, with equipment and safety gear built in.
Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is another way into the trade. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that some welders start through an employer-based apprenticeship program. According to Apprenticeship.gov, apprentices earn a competitive wage from day one and combine on-the-job learning with classroom training.
What Extra Costs Come With Welding Classes?
Tuition is only part of the bill. Most programs ask you to buy your own tools, protective gear, and books. Here is what the schools we checked list on top of tuition:
- Tools and gear: Riverland estimates about $300, Chemeketa lists $500 to $1,900, and Alvin’s tool kit costs about $1,600.
- Books: Chemeketa lists $445 to $860 depending on the program, and Riverland estimates $900.
- Certification tests: Chemeketa lists optional AWS certification tests at $510 to $1,020.
- Living costs: Rent, food, and transportation add up, especially in a full-time program that leaves little time for work.
Some schools bundle tools, safety gear, or even housing into tuition, while others charge for each item. Ask the admissions office for a full cost sheet before you buy any equipment on your own.
How Much Does Welding Certification Cost?
A welding certification shows employers that you can pass a recognized test. The American Welding Society (AWS) is the main certifying body in the US. Its fees depend on the credential and on whether you are an AWS member.

Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
The CWI is a respected credential for welders who want to move into inspection. The initial exams cost $1,255 for AWS members and $1,520 for non-members. Many candidates buy a seminar and exam package, which costs $3,070 to $4,200 depending on the format.
CWIs renew in the third and sixth years, then recertify in the ninth year. A renewal by work experience costs $650 for members and $915 for non-members. The ninth-year recertification by Part B exam costs $1,165 for members and $1,430 for non-members.
Endorsement Exams
AWS also offers endorsements in specific codes. These include structural steel (D1.1), structural aluminum (D1.2), bridge welding (D1.5), railroad (D15.1), aerospace (D17.1), and pipeline (API 1104). Each of these endorsement exams costs $445 for members and $540 for non-members.
How Can You Lower the Cost of Welding School?
Start with the FAFSA. Federal Pell Grants can pay for eligible community colleges, career schools, and trade schools, and you don’t have to pay them back. For the 2026–27 award year, the maximum Pell Grant is $7,395. That is more than the tuition for Alvin’s first welding certificate.
Welding Scholarships
The AWS Foundation opened its 2026 scholarship season with $2.7 million available. In 2025, it awarded scholarships to more than 1,500 students, worth from $1,000 to over $8,000. Two-thirds of those awards went to students in technical schools.
Investing in welding education is essential to building a skilled workforce for the industries of today and tomorrow.

Veterans Benefits
The Post-9/11 GI Bill can cover a large share of welding school. If you qualify for the maximum benefit, the VA covers the full cost of public, in-state tuition and fees. The VA caps the rates for private schools, and it adds a monthly housing allowance for students in school more than half time.
Workforce and Employer Programs
Apprenticeships let you train on the job while an employer pays your wage. Some private welding schools also list Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grants among their funding options. Ask your local workforce office whether you qualify.
beenhereApply earlySubmit your FAFSA as soon as the form opens. For the 2026 season, the deadline for AWS National, District, and Section scholarships was March 1, so plan your applications months before your program starts.
Is Welding School Worth the Cost?
For many people who enjoy hands-on work, yes. Welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers earned a median of $53,750 a year in May 2025, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10% earned less than $39,240, and the highest 10% earned more than $77,530.
Job growth is slow, at 2% from 2025 to 2035. Still, the BLS projects about 40,300 openings each year, mostly to replace workers who retire or change careers. A $2,000 certificate costs less than 4% of the median yearly wage, while a $30,000 program costs more than half of it.
How to Choose the Right Welding Program
The cheapest program isn’t always the best value. Compare the full package, from shop time to the credentials you leave with. Use these checks to narrow your options:
- Confirm which processes the program covers: SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (flux core), and GTAW (TIG).
- Ask how many hours you spend welding in the lab compared with the classroom.
- Check whether the curriculum follows AWS SENSE standards.
- Ask whether the school takes part in federal student aid.
- Ask for the job placement rate and which local employers hire graduates.
SENSE is not an accreditation. It is a set of minimum standards that AWS created in 1993 for schools to build welding programs on. Students who complete SENSE coursework earn an AWS SENSE Certificate of Completion.
A campus visit tells you more than a brochure. Look at the booths, the machines, and how many students share each instructor. Then ask how many graduates pass their first welding test and find work in the trade.
