About Deanna

I utilize a collaborative active learning technique in my role as an ESL Teacher and ELA/Writing Tutor. I understand that each person learns differently. I seek to understand the learning patterns of my students and utilize procedure oriented tutoring, which maximizes their potential to learn. As one of my ELA/writing students you will benefit from structured feedback and process oriented work that will help you to achieve your writing goals. As one of my college writing students I can help you navigate MLA and APA writing requirements as well as idea formation. As one of my ESL learners you will benefit from professional assessments and homework to maximize your tutoring sessions. If you are seeking conversational English only we will have great conversations to increase your English language fluency.

Here is a fact: I am a FUN person! I believe that education can be enjoyable. When we find a personal connection to learning we can increase the retention of knowledge. I consider myself a "safe" place for students to voice their opinions and ideas. Trying to learn a new concept can be daunting. Learning a new language makes us feel vulnerable and unsure. We make a lot of mistakes and that is ok. In fact, it is great! Mistakes help us to learn and retain information. When writing it is easy to get "stuck". I help students become unstuck and find their internal writer. I am interested in ideas that are different from mine and I encourage students to own their truth and be respectful of others.

I truly enjoy discussing topics and conversing with my students. I love to see the "aha" moments and then find a way to relate it back to the student. I enjoy talking with students about different subjects and how they can affect our lives. Often, these discussions lead to further understanding of the English language and increased writing abilities. I enjoy helping my students gain language skills!

I started teaching as a home school teacher for my son who suffers from multiple chronic illnesses. Traditional public school could not accomodate his needs and I found myself becoming teacher and mom. We found new and interesting ways to build education around his medical needs. He is now in in public High School and doing very well. I then moved into Special Education, teaching children with learning disabilities and major intellectual disabilities such as Autism, ODD, ADHD, and Down's Syndrome. Now as a private tutor I enjoy working with students all over the world. This is one my greatest joys.

My education:

TESOL Certificate - Arizona State University

National Tutors Association - Intermediate Tutoring Certificate

Harvard Higher Education Teaching Certificate

MA: Human Behavior

BS: Organizational Behavior

I encourage a short meeting to discuss my students needs and go over the program. This allows me to increase the likelihood of a collaborative relationship. I also try to share a little about myself and background. I am a strong empathizer. I know how to increase confidence in my students and energize their learning behaviors. I provide an initial structure that we can discuss and both agree too. I believe in enjoying the learning process and I create fun collaborative opportunities for my students to participate in.

I currently work with K-12 students on ELA, writing, and spelling, young adult students in college (APA and MLA formatting), and students who are learning English as a second language. In the past I have worked with students in the k-12 public school sector. These students have ranged from minimal learning needs to Special Education: Autism (I have specific training in this area), ODD, Down's Syndrome, ADHD. I have also worked with college level students.

The teacher should "love" to teach and they should be a people person. Let's face it. It's no fun to work with someone who doesn't want to be there. They need to be a teacher who is passionate about teaching, learning, AND their students individual needs.

A middle school student who has been struggling with writing recently told me that he has learned to love writing as we have worked together. This is a huge win! Not just for me as a tutor but for him as he makes future academic goals. I am honored that my students are growing and succeeding.

I recently had an experience with an ESL student who has been struggling with conversational English. She found that over a period of time her confidence has grown and she is finding it easier to converse with those around her. I count this as a win and I am so grateful we have been able to work together.

I like to speak with the student before I set a price. This way I can be attune to the students needs and negotiate a price that works for both of us.
