The 3-fret rule is one of the first technique concepts every bassist needs to understand.

• One finger per fret: assign each left-hand finger to cover one fret in a 3-fret span, so your index finger handles fret 1, your middle fret 2, your ring finger fret 3.
• Left-hand efficiency: this rule reduces unnecessary finger movement and prevents tension in the hand.
• Proper thumb placement: keep your thumb behind the middle finger on the back of the neck to support the 3-fret span.
• When to shift positions: once your reach extends beyond three frets, it's time to shift your hand position along the neck rather than overstretch.

Mastering this rule early prevents bad habits that are hard to unlearn later.

Bass guitar tutors in San Francisco typically charge $48/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• The level of study and your learning goals
• The teacher's expertise and musical background
• The package you choose (one-off session or regular weekly lessons)
• The lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's studio)

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining just as effective.

Learning bass guitar effectively comes down to combining the right fundamentals with consistent practice.

• Start with proper posture and technique: correct hand position, a relaxed grip, and good posture prevent injury and accelerate progress.
• Learn to read tabs and bass clef notation: tabs are a fast way to start playing songs, while reading music opens up a much wider repertoire.
• Focus on rhythm and groove: the bass guitar's main role is rhythmic — practice with a metronome or drum track to develop a steady pulse.
• Study scales, patterns, and the fretboard: knowing the major and minor scales across the neck helps you play in any key and improvise confidently.

Working with a qualified bass tutor is the fastest way to build solid foundations and avoid common beginner mistakes.
