Understanding the 3-3 tone change is essential for sounding natural in Chinese.

• The rule: when two third tones appear in a row, the first one changes to a second (rising) tone.
• Key example: 你好 (nǐ hǎo) is actually pronounced ní hǎo in natural speech.
• Further illustrations: 很好 (hěn hǎo) becomes hén hǎo, meaning "very good".
• Why it matters: skipping this rule makes your speech sound choppy and unnatural to native ears.

A tutor can help you practice tone changes with real conversations and instant feedback.

Chinese tutors in Bellevue typically charge $30/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

• Your level: whether you need basic conversation or advanced fluency
• Tutor experience: the instructor's credentials and track record
• Lesson frequency: the duration and frequency of lessons
• Teaching mode: the lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's)

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining effective.

You can make real progress in Chinese independently if you follow a clear plan.

• Master pinyin first: pinyin is the romanization system that maps sounds to letters, and the four tones give each syllable its meaning.
• Grow your word bank: focus on high-frequency words and common phrases you can use in daily situations.
• Work on reading and writing: start with the most common 100–200 characters and learn their radicals for easier recognition.
• Immerse yourself daily: surround yourself with the language through music, videos, and short reading practice.

A private tutor can fill the gaps that self-study leaves, especially for pronunciation and conversation.
