Starting crochet means learning a handful of key skills before jumping into a full project.

• The slip knot and chain stitch: every crochet project starts here — the chain is your foundation row.
• The single crochet stitch: it's the simplest stitch and the one used in most beginner patterns like dishcloths or scarves.
• A simple rectangle project: a dishcloth, bookmark, or small scarf lets you practice tension and consistent stitch count.
• Yarn and hook selection: a medium-weight yarn (size 4) with a 5mm hook is the easiest combo to learn with.

Once you can crochet a flat rectangle evenly, you're ready to try rounds, increases, and real patterns.

The average cost of crochet lessons in Louisville is around $20/h.

The cost depends on a few things:

• Your current level (total beginner, some experience, or returning after a break)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The duration and frequency of your sessions
• Whether you choose in-person or video call sessions

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons in advance.

Most beginners find crochet easier to pick up than knitting, but both crafts have their own learning curve.

• Tools: crochet uses a single hook while knitting requires two needles — fewer moving parts makes crochet simpler to start.
• Stitch mistakes: in crochet, you only ever work one live stitch at a time, so dropped stitches are much easier to fix.
• Speed of progress: crochet stitches are taller and build up faster, so you finish your first project sooner.
• What knitting does better: knitting produces flatter, stretchier fabric ideal for garments like sweaters and socks.

A tutor who teaches both can help you decide which craft suits your goals and guide you through the basics from day one.
