Every confident artist relies on basic skills that are easy to learn with the right guidance.

• Line control: the ability to draw steady, confident strokes that define the edges and contours of your subject.
• Shapes and proportion: breaking any subject into simple geometric forms like circles, rectangles, and triangles before adding detail.
• Value: mastering hatching, cross-hatching, and blending to bring volume to your sketches.
• Perspective: representing depth and distance so objects appear realistic in space.
• Observation: learning to draw what you actually see rather than what your brain assumes.

These fundamentals unlock every drawing style, from realistic portraits to expressive illustration.

In Richmond, expect to pay about $70/h for an hour of drawing.

The cost depends on:

• Your current level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced
• The tutor's experience: their qualifications, background, and teaching track record
• Lesson duration and frequency: the package you choose, whether one-off or regular sessions
• The lesson format: where and how the lessons take place

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

You can make real progress in drawing by yourself with the right method and consistency.

• Start with basic shapes: practice drawing circles, cubes, and cylinders to build hand-eye coordination.
• Sketch daily: even fifteen minutes a day builds muscle memory faster than occasional long sessions.
• Draw from observation: alternate between drawing from life and from reference images to develop versatility.
• Seek feedback: compare your recent sketches to older ones to track progress and spot weaknesses.

Combining independent practice with expert feedback is the fastest path to visible improvement.
