Drawing is a good career, but it can certainly be more challenging than others. However, there are several alternatives for developing professionally. Graphic design, game design, illustration, motion graphics design, as well as animation and fashion designer. If you can draw and you’d like to make a career out of it working as a tattoo artist, interior designer or industrial designer are also alternatives. Let’s talk about these options a bit more: a graphic designer is in charge of developing original images for clothing, websites, print media, signs, and logos.
Illustrators are in charge of creating drawings for advertising, books, magazines, or any type of business that requires an illustrated design. Industrial designers are in charge of designing and developing the appearance of cars, appliances, toys, and many other consumer products. An animator creates moving drawings for cartoons, video games or animated films, while a game designer draws the different platforms for video games. The highest paying drawing jobs are Art Director and Advertising Designer.
Drawing is not easier or harder than painting, but children are usually taught to draw first because it requires fewer supplies. In reality, the two mediums are equally challenging and quite different. One miss conception might be that painting is harder because it requires using color and combining them to create aesthetic combinations that are balanced, but drawing is equally challenging, and some may say even more challenging because drawing uses black and white to express and this can be a limited work frame to work in. Contrasting and using a monochromatic setting can be quite challenging to be expressive and move the viewer, that’s why some people may consider painting harder, but it all depends on the piece and the level of expressivity that is being searched.
In general, it is hard to fully answer the question; if we continue the comparison, painting can be harder to correct than drawing for example. In short, both of them have their pros and cons and there is no definitive answer. Looking at the other end of the question, we can say that both of these mediums are accessible when it comes to beginning to learn them. Both painting and drawing have basic techniques that once learned can give us good and quick results - that’s the beauty of it.
Advertising design is the highest-paying drawing job, featuring a salary of almost 72,000 USD per year. Their job consists in using calligraphy, illustration, and graphic design to create a compelling image to use for advertising. The artist then presents several sketches, hand-drawn or computer generated, to their client. It is a job in which the Advertising Designer uses images to create interest in the consumer’s mind. Art Director is the second place with a salary between 70,000 USD and 71,000 USD per year. It is an upper-level executive position, in which the Art Director is in charge of the project’s vision. The Art Director is responsible for the supervision of the work of the designer and making everyone work in the same direction to achieve a coherent and cohesive result.
The Art Director has a strong background in design, illustration, and drawing, as it is them who will make sure that the final design is consistent throughout the many variants of the same theme. And because they are in charge of guiding the work of several illustrators and designers, they are required to have a strong sense of what is possible in illustration and design to give the artists good feedback that guides the work to a strong concept.
