Getting your embouchure right from the start is the key to producing a clear, full sound on the flute.

• Embouchure hole contact: the lower lip covers roughly one quarter of the hole, letting the rest stay open for the air to travel across.
• Firmness: the corners of the lips stay slightly engaged — not tight — to keep the airstream focused and steady.
• Air split: blowing at a slight downward angle across the embouchure hole sends the right amount of air inside the instrument.
• Tension-free tone: the lower lip should look relaxed and soft, never pressed hard against the instrument.

Working with a qualified flute teacher makes it much easier to build a clean embouchure from your very first lesson.

In Los Angeles, expect to pay about $58/h for an hour of flute instruction.

The cost depends on:

• The level of study (elementary school, high school, or adult learner)
• The teacher's expertise and performance background
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The teaching mode (in-person or video call)

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style before committing.

Self-teaching the flute is absolutely possible, especially with the wealth of online resources available today.

• First notes: most beginners start by blowing across the headjoint to develop a steady tone before assembling the full instrument.
• Online lessons: video tutorials designed for flute beginners cover breathing, posture, and note reading in a logical, step-by-step order.
• Risk of bad habits: without feedback, it's easy to develop grip tension or an inefficient air angle that becomes very hard to unlearn later.
• Hybrid approach: even a few lessons with a qualified tutor at the start can help you build correct habits and then progress independently with confidence.

Whether you go fully independent or take regular lessons, starting with solid fundamentals is what separates fast progress from years of frustration.
