Lip placement on the flute — called the embouchure — is one of the first fundamentals you need to get right.

• Lip contact: your lower lip rests lightly against the edge of the embouchure hole — your lips do not wrap around or go inside the flute.
• Lip corners: keep the corners of your mouth firm but relaxed, as if forming a small, controlled smile.
• Air angle: picture blowing across the top of a bottle — the angle of your airstream works the same way on the flute.
• Tension-free tone: the lower lip should look relaxed and soft, never pressed hard against the instrument.

These fundamentals become second nature quickly — especially with personalized guidance from an experienced instructor.

Pricing can vary based on:

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

Yes, you can make real progress teaching yourself the flute — but there are important things to know before you start.

• Getting your first sound: producing a tone on the flute headjoint alone before adding the body is the standard first step for self-learners and students alike.
• Free resources: structured YouTube channels, PDF method books, and apps like tonestro give self-learners a clear path to follow.
• Watch out for: self-taught flutists often struggle most with breath support and tone quality — areas where a trained ear makes a real difference.
• Hybrid approach: even a few lessons with a qualified tutor at the start can help you build correct habits and then progress independently with confidence.

A private flute teacher can give you the personalized correction that no video or app can replicate.
