Every defender should master the 5 S's to read the game and react quickly.

• Close down: get tight to the opponent as fast as possible to apply pressure.
• Decelerate: reduce your speed as you approach so you stay on your feet and ready to react.
• Stand up: adopt a low, side-on stance with knees bent to stay ready for any direction change.
• Steer: force the opponent onto their weaker foot or toward a teammate for support.
• Safety: make your challenge only when the moment is right and the ball is exposed.

With regular guidance, the 5 S's become instinctive and transform your defensive game.
