The 5 S's are a set of defending principles that help players stay organized and win the ball back.

• Close down: get tight to the opponent as fast as possible to apply pressure.
• Slow down: ease off just before reaching the attacker so you can stay balanced and avoid being beaten.
• Stand up: adopt a low, side-on stance with knees bent to stay ready for any direction change.
• Steer: force the opponent onto their weaker foot or toward a teammate for support.
• Secure: make your challenge only when the moment is right and the ball is exposed.

Practicing these principles with a tutor helps you defend with confidence in any match situation.
