French proficiency is measured using the CEFR scale, which divides learners into six levels from A1 (complete beginner) to C2 (native-like mastery).

• A1 – Beginner: You can understand and use basic phrases, introduce yourself, and handle very simple interactions.
• A2 – Elementary: You can discuss familiar topics like family, shopping, and daily routines in simple sentences.
• B1 – Intermediate: B1 learners produce connected text on subjects they know and can describe experiences and explain views.
• B2 – Upper Intermediate: At B2, French becomes a tool for nuanced communication — you follow news, debates, and professional conversations.
• C1–C2 – Advanced to Mastery: These levels are the goal for professionals, academics, and anyone seeking to pass certifications like DALF.

Understanding where you stand on the CEFR scale is the first step to setting realistic, motivating French learning goals.
