Find your private Excel tutoring in Anchorage

Excel beginners should focus on five essential areas that form the backbone of daily spreadsheet work.

• Data entry and formatting: type values into cells, adjust column widths, and apply number formats like currency or percentages so your data stays clear and readable.
• Core functions like SUM, AVERAGE, and COUNT: start every formula with =, then use SUM to add totals, AVERAGE for means, and COUNT to tally entries in a range.
• Sorting and filtering: arrange rows alphabetically or by value, and use filters to display only the records you need at a given moment.
• Relative and absolute cell references: understand the difference between A1 (relative) and $A$1 (absolute) so your formulas copy correctly across rows and columns.
• Creating basic charts: select your numbers, insert a chart, and customize titles and colors for a quick visual summary.

Once you're confident with these basics, features like PivotTables and VLOOKUP become much easier to pick up.
