What is the principle of painting?

The principles of painting and art are seven, these are rhythm, balance, emphasis or contrast, proportion, pattern, harmony, unity and variety.

Rhythm is created by movement implied through the repetition of elements of art in a non-uniform but organized way. In painting, this is created by the careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.

Balance is the sense that the painting feels stable. This can be achieved in three different ways: symmetry, asymmetry and radial symmetry.

Emphasis is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant and commands the viewer's attention. This is often achieved by contrast. Contrast is created by placing different art elements together to add emphasis, this can also be through light/dark effects.

Proportion refers to the relationship of certain elements to the whole and to each other - the size of the subject/object compared to the rest of the objects in the composition.

Pattern is the repetition and placement of repetitions of an element. Anything can be turned into a pattern through repetition.

Harmony is a way of combining similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities (achieved through use of repetitions and subtle gradual changes).

Lastly, there is unity and variety: Unity refers to the completeness of the composition and all the elements working together to create a unified whole. Variety creates an ongoing interest in a composition, it is the utilization of various art elements like color, line, or texture.

What are some elements of Painting?

The elements of the painting are line, shape, form, space and color.

The line is pretty much self-explanatory: it is a mark with greater length than width. A line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.

The shape is a closed line. A shape is two-dimensional, flat, and expresses height and width.

Forms are three-dimensional elements and can be geometric or organic. These range from cubic, spherical, pyramidal, or conical, among many others.

Space refers to the three-dimensionality or depth created in a composition, consisting of positive and negative space, which can be utilized to create different effects.  The space around objects is of- ten called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.

Color is light reflected off of objects. Color has three main characteristics: hue (the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is).

Are Painting classes worth it?

Starting up and participating in painting classes is quite worth it. You can start by signing up to a workshop around your neighborhood. Usually, these workshops start by teaching you simple techniques to start developing your skill. This is a great alternative, especially if the members are beginners as well. You can feel supported by a community of people that are not competing to be the best, but are interested in learning from scratch the beautiful art of painting. You can also look for tutorials online; these tutorials are quite great because they teach specific techniques or general techniques. The advantage is that once you develop a specific interest, particular to a certain skill you would like to improve, you can always use these videos to get better at it. Finally, there is the option of finding a private teacher to teach you painting. This is great because a lesson with a private teacher is a lesson tailored to your needs; the teacher can follow your progress and listen to you and figure out your interests. Finding a private teacher in Tallahassee might be easier than you think. Visit Superprof and find a private instructor for you to start learning Painting sooner than you think.
