A camera is the basis of a good photograph. At the end of the day, a photograph has a lot to do with its tool — the camera. The camera broken down into its essential elements is a body that controls the amount of light that reaches a light-sensitive surface, which in this case can either be film, a digital sensor, or another surface. Yet, from its essential parts the camara has come a long way from its early designs.Â
The first essential part of a camera is its body. The body of a camera is the light-tight box that allows light to be captured on a surface which can be film, paper, or a digital sensor.Â
The camera lens is the second essential part of a camera. The first camera didn’t even use a traditional lens as we know them today. A small, tiny hole called a pinhole was what they used to call a lens. Today lenses come in all kinds of sizes and magnifications that are made of durable glass. The glass lets you focus and capture light quicker and clearer. This has also allowed cameras to allow magnification of an image. The magnify element or zoom as it is now widely known allows photographers to zoom into a scene without changing to a different lens.Â
A film plane is another aspect of a camera, which allows an image to be captured. Modern-day cameras have changed this film plane to a digital sensor, but the concept and purpose works the same as a film plane. Even film technology has modernized and has allowed photographers to create images with sharper details, better contrast ranges, and the ability to capture images in low light. Â
The final element of a camera is its shutter. The shutter is a new aspect of modern-day camera, and this mechanism controls the light from reaching the film plane or digital sensor. All shutters are made with multiple capacities of speed, but all are designed on the same basis. Shutters are designed with a variable aperture opening or a f-stop that is then adjusted by a shutter speed, which is the time as to when it should be opened.Â
There is a variety of styles, sizes, and formats of camera bodies for every kind of photographer. To encompass all the camera styles there are five that are superior.Â
Large format cameras are designed to use large sheet film or digital backs. These cameras give a photographer maximum control over perspective and exposure. These cameras are the preferred camera body for commercial and fine art photographers.Â
Medium format cameras use 120 films and are made in a variety of shapes then tend to be boxy. Most medium format cameras are manually operated, but automatic functions do exist. These cameras are typically used for portrait and commercial photographers.Â
SLR and DSLR camaras are the most commonly used cameras by today’s pro and novice photographers. SLR is the 35mm film camara, whereas the DSLR is the digital modern format. The names of these camaras come from its acronym, which means Single Lens Reflex and Digital Single Lens Reflex. These cameras also have the ability to change lenses.Â
Point and shoot cameras have now been replaced with cell phone cameras, although their lens optics still remain superior to those of phone camera lenses. These cameras were the ones that were commercially sold to every family and used anything from 110mm to 35mm film. These cameras also eventually became digital camaras as technology evolved.Â
Last, but not least is the phone camera. Typically, these camaras have lower lens optics, which makes photographs harder to capture really fine and crisp images. Yet, these internal phone cameras have evolved into better technology that they cannot be ignored. There is even a new photography genre that is known as iPhoneography. Â
