Chances are the reason why you are reading this is because you have always been interested in learning something new. More specifically, Salsa dancing!
Salsa is a multiple-level dance form that consists of complex yet simple movements. Some key characteristics of Salsa include moving your feet and body in unison with the beat all while following and leading with your partner.
When starting out, this can be a whirlwind for beginners or returning Salsa students. But, like other skill sets that one learns, it gets easier with time and much more enjoyable as many of the patterns transition to instinct.
With Superprof, you can connect with fun, experienced Salsa tutors to get you started on the right foot. Simply scroll through our lists of tutors located in Washington DC, choose your level of dance, and discover the joy of learning Salsa at the pace and price of your choosing.
The Salsa culture is that of community and fun. Why wait a second longer? Try out a Salsa class today!
Since the early 18th Century, Salsa traditionally originated in Cuba and was specific to Cuban style of music and dance.
Known for its sexual moves and invigorating music over time, the dance form eventually garnered appreciation but did not gain mainstream popularity in the United States until the 1960s.
Thanks to Johnny Pacheco, a Dominican-American famous composer, and his contributions, Pacheco helped in the naming of this spicy dance and music genre as Salsa for the blend of different influences, rhythms, and styles.
The literal translation for salsa in Spanish is "sauce" which for Pacheco was a fitting word to describe the dance form’s influence and creation from Latin music, Mambo, Pachanga, Rumba, Jazz, and most importantly, Afro-Caribbean culture.
Many of the traditional African instruments were brought by the slaves during the Transatlantic trade routes to Cuba and Puerto Rico and were incorporated into Salsa music.
Instruments like bongos, timbales, and claves would create the distinctive rhythms we recognize today in Salsa.
Outside of Salsa’s worldly origins, the music and lyrics are also representatives of the stories and challenges of the day-to-day life and poverty experienced by its founding culture and society in the 1960s.
Its rise in popularity was partially due to many Latin countries gaining their independence or experiencing civil rights movements around the same time. These social changes flow into the music people hear and Salsa being a truly Latin genre, it was considered the people’s music rather than the mainstream music of the western culture.
Artists like Pedro Aguilar, affectionately known as ‘Cuban Pete’ became a star in the Latin dance world for Salsa as well as Maykel Fonts, Alberto Valdes, and Johnny Vazquez to name a few.
Before you begin your Superprof lessons, let’s refresh on some necessary overview of the basic step.
Listening to the music and finding the beat, you want to measure in beats of 4. Salsa uses this measurement to divide counts of 8 to fit for the movement of the shuffle. You can also think of it as two measures of 8 beats.
We recommend watching a quick video on YouTube to count with the dancers and familiarize yourself with the measurement.
Next, the steps are a sort of shuffle with a little swaying of the hips. While shuffling to the beats of 4, keep your elbows bent and try not to have them lay limp along your sides.
Another note, Salsa dancers usually wear clothes that flow and are easy to move in. You can take it to another level and wear bright colors and sometimes sparkly to reference Salsa culture known for its boldness and getting noticed.
If you are a female dancer, Salsa dancers wear high heels when dancing and at events. A heel of 2.5-3 inches is recommended while most professionals prefer the 3 inches. The flexible soles of Salsa dancing shoes will be beneficial after you have been dancing for a whole night straight.
Make sure the shoes are a tight fit otherwise you can expect blisters and sore feet. Ouch! Let’s try to avoid that!
For male Salsa dancers, find a pair of leather shoes that have flexible soles. The tight leather may be painful at first but once you break in your dance shoes, you have a pair that will last a lifetime.
Now that you’ve covered the basics and know what you need to wear before, let’s talk Salsa tutors!
