FAQ

⚽ How does the 80/20 training rule apply to swimming?

Swimming coaches use the 80/20 rule to structure workouts and maximize long-term progress.

  • The core idea: The principle means spending the majority of training at a comfortable effort level, saving hard sets for a small portion of sessions.
  • Why it works: Low-intensity swimming builds aerobic capacity and protects you from burnout and injury.
  • High-intensity sets: Harder sets develop power, stroke efficiency, and the ability to push through fatigue.
  • Who it applies to: The 80/20 approach works for lap swimmers, triathletes, and anyone looking to progress without overtraining.

A private swim coach can help you apply the 80/20 rule to your personal goals and current fitness level.

πŸ’° What's the average price for swimming classes in Boise?

A private swimming lesson in Boise costs approximately $30/h.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

  • Your current level (complete beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
  • The instructor's certifications and years of coaching
  • The package you choose (single lesson or a block booking)
  • The lesson format (pool at the tutor's facility, public pool, or online coaching)

Online technique review sessions are often more affordable while remaining effective.

🏊 How many sessions are needed to become a confident swimmer?

Learning to swim varies from person to person β€” some pick it up in a few weeks, others need several months of regular sessions.

  • Total beginner adults: An adult learning from scratch can expect around 20 lessons before feeling comfortable in deep water.
  • Children: Kids aged 4 to 7 often need 30 to 50 lessons to develop solid swimming skills, since progress is more gradual.
  • Lesson frequency: Regular water time between lessons helps reinforce what you learn and builds muscle memory faster.
  • Private vs. group lessons: Private sessions can cut learning time roughly in half compared to standard group formats.

A private swimming instructor can assess your level from the first session and give you a realistic timeline to reach your goals.

Tips to improve your swimming technique in Boise

What makes a good swimming lesson?

Learning how to swim can be somewhat intimidating and therefore having a good lesson is fundamental in order to have a good experience.

When learning how to swim in Idaho, just like when you learn any discipline, having a teacher or instructor that is engaged and patient is key for a good experience. Your instructor tailors the lesson based on your difficulties and the skill level the student may have, and that gives the student a quicker way to improve.

Good instructors also create a lesson plan that fits the student’s interests. This is why the communication between instructor and student plays a major role in their lessons.

It is also important to understand that progress when it comes to swimming takes some time and you might not see results right away. Learning how to properly swim takes time and dedication. This is something that a good lesson will emphasize. The instructor’s job is to keep you motivated as you progress slowly and steadily.

What should I avoid doing when swimming?

The most common mistake swimmers do is perform an arm stroke with their elbow positioned low. Arm strokes are the most important element of freestyle swimming. By performing a large and proper arm stroke, the student will be able to catch a large amount of water. To correct this mistake related to the elbow, you only need to turn your forearm inside and that will keep the arm long so it can do the technique properly.

Another common mistake is breathing while performing an arm stroke. What we want to do is to breathe in between arm strokes, while one is in front and the other is in recovery. This allows us to turn to the side and breathe.

This brings us to another mistake which is lifting your head up in order to breathe. This makes swimming hard because this makes your body go down into the water and speed slows down dramatically.

Short arm strokes are our final mistake that we want to avoid. When we do an arm stroke we want to keep the arm long for the duration of the whole rotation. One common mistake many swimming students make is to shrink the arm after it has gone half way.

All of these are common mistakes that are easily fixed and one can certainly avoid by going step by step learning your technique and building a good, solid foundation.

What life skills does swimming give you?

Learning to swim is a great experience, because it teaches how to be consistent and patient, and ultimately it teaches you how to care for something that is related to you, your health and your well-being in general.

When we spend time learning something that is our own, we spend time caring for ourselves; swimming is no different. In fact, swimming proficiency is learned slowly and in order to do so we need to be consistent. This teaches us how to care for something by giving it our time, dedication and consistency throughout months, years or even decades.

Learning how to swim therefore will teach you how to be patient and will show you a way to enjoy the process and not the result. Learning to enjoy the process is something that any skill discipline will give you because in order for us to stay motivated we need to find joy in training. The reward is learning skills you did not have before but furthermore, the reward is a change in character and an experience that teaches us how to care and love something patiently.
