The 80/20 principle shapes how competitive and recreational swimmers plan their training week.

• The core idea: The principle means spending the majority of training at a comfortable effort level, saving hard sets for a small portion of sessions.
• Why it works: Easy laps strengthen your cardiovascular base without overtaxing your muscles.
• High-intensity sets: Sprint work, kick sets, and threshold swims make up the demanding 20% of each training block.
• Who it applies to: Beginners and competitive swimmers alike benefit from balancing effort with recovery.

A private swim coach can help you apply the 80/20 rule to your personal goals and current fitness level.

A private swimming lesson in St. Charles costs approximately $21/h.

Pricing can vary based on:

• The level of study (children, teens, or adult learners)
• The teacher's expertise and competitive background
• The duration and frequency of sessions
• The lesson format (pool at the tutor's facility, public pool, or online coaching)

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

There is no single answer, but a few key factors help estimate how many hours you'll need.

• Total beginner adults: An adult learning from scratch can expect around 20 lessons before feeling comfortable in deep water.
• Children: Children tend to take longer than adults but retain skills better once learned.
• Lesson frequency: The more consistently you train, the fewer total hours you'll need to reach your goal.
• Private vs. group lessons: One-on-one lessons move faster than group classes because the instructor focuses entirely on your technique.

A private swimming instructor can assess your level from the first session and give you a realistic timeline to reach your goals.
