Swimming coaches use the 80/20 rule to structure workouts and maximize long-term progress.

• The core idea: 80% of your swimming should be done at low intensity, while 20% focuses on high-effort work.
• Why it works: Easy laps strengthen your cardiovascular base without overtaxing your muscles.
• High-intensity sets: The 20% includes drills, race-pace swims, and interval training that sharpen speed and technique.
• Who it applies to: The 80/20 approach works for lap swimmers, triathletes, and anyone looking to progress without overtraining.

Working with an experienced instructor makes it easier to structure your training and see real results.

Swimming tutors in Sunnyvale typically charge $32/h per hour.

Pricing can vary based on:

• The level of study (children, teens, or adult learners)
• The tutor's experience and aquatic qualifications
• The package you choose (single lesson or a block booking)
• The teaching mode (in-person water session or video technique review)

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

Learning to swim varies from person to person — some pick it up in a few weeks, others need several months of regular sessions.

• Total beginner adults: Most adults who have never swum need between 20 and 30 hours of lessons to swim independently and safely.
• Children: Children tend to take longer than adults but retain skills better once learned.
• Lesson frequency: Practicing two to three times a week speeds up progress significantly compared to once-a-week sessions.
• Private vs. group lessons: Private sessions can cut learning time roughly in half compared to standard group formats.

Working with a dedicated tutor means every lesson is designed around your needs, so you progress faster and with more confidence.
